    Hello,

    Re: Win98SE > Internet Explorer 6 SP1

    When doing a HijackThis-check I get:

015: Protocol Defaults: @jvt, protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
Exactly the same message referring to: file, ftp, http and https.

Never seen before and my Laptop with exactly the same settings in
Internet, Local, Trusted etc. does not show these messages when performing
    HijackThis.

Moreover, above messages cannot be deleted when marked to be fixed.

    Your help will be appreciated.

    Best regards,
    AdriaanR

    Hi Adriaan,

HijackThick: Computer Zone vs Internet Zone

    Hi Charles,

Do you mean Safe Mode and fix in Hijack or Safe Mode and Registry\Internet settings.
I have opened HijackThis while in the Safe Mode and marked the lines (as discussed) to delete, however they show up each time I scan again.

I left the registry untouched as I don't know whether said lines ought to be there or not. Furthermore I don't know whether actions can be taken in the registry while in the Safe Mode.

    See you,
    AdriaanR

    Hi Adriaan,

I meant in safe mode and fix.

The registry can be changed provided logged in with admin credentials.

But I see you tried that already.

If you try deleting manually, what happens? Try that also in safe mode as well.

Create a System Restore point before you make any changes.

    Regards - Charles

    HijackThis: etc

    Charles,

    Found your answer when typing:

    In software properties it says:
    Internet Explorer 6 SP1 + workingset
and Outlook Express is the very same version.

Opening System Info, asking to repair the IE,
I get a small menu named Internet Explorer 6
    however saying:
Internet Explorer 5 cannot be repaired as
    MSXMLR.DLL is missing.
Internet Explorer 5.0 is mentioned in the registry as well and referring to the 5 mysterious files.

    AdriaanR

PS. Can all of the registry-settings of IE 5.0 safely be exported to e.g. My Documents ?

    HijackThis

    Hello,

    While downloading a new IE6 SP1 I got a message saying:

"Windows Update Setup cannot download data as available install
sites Setup cannot use present proxy settings "
Now there is an icon on the desktop saying "restart update" and to the best
of my knowledge I have no proxy server installed.

Apart from this failure the Hijack messages abt the Zones disappeared, in stead now there is:
    "014 - IERESET.INF: Start_page_URL (two lines)

But the worst thing is that Outlook Express 6 SP1 is not functioning anymore.
I get: "MSIMN caused an error in Module SHLWAPI.DLL on 0177: 70bd899f
So I downloaded a SHLWAPI.dll from the web and tried to install in
    C:\Windows\System.
However in vain as I get: SHLWAPI.dll cannot be replaced as it being used.

    Please help me.

    AdriaanR

    Hi Adriaan,

Why are you trying to repair IE?

What ever you did is causing a bigger problem than the one you started with. As far as I can tell, you had a strange HJT entry and was trying to find out what it was. What happened in the meantime?

Did you create a SR restore point before doing anything? I would advise you to go back to that restore point and just stop.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

I did not make a restore point.
The reason is that I recognized the problem when I found out that OE was
    not functioning again.
This problem dates back to the time that I had a second hand HP Laserjet
    1012 monochroom installed.
The supplier deleted - against my instructions - IE6 SP1 and installed
    IE 5.0 in stead.
As from that moment there is this OE-problem plus the renewed mentioning
    of reset.inf (URL) in HijackThis.
At earlier moments I succeeded to solve the problem by downloading a
    fresh copy of IE6 SP1.
However now I get the error "setup cannot download data on available
    installationsites "

HP confirms that Laserjet 1012 works with IE6 SP1 as well. Nevertheless
    I uninstalled this printer.

Again I get "there is no internet-connection, try again" when starting
e.g. Mailwasher and when in windows-update "cannot download, check
whether you are connected to the internet "

    I am very sorry.

Ok, here's what you should do at this point: post in the IE/OE section with a link to this thread.

A better chance of folks more familiar with OE - I don't use it, to respond.

BTW, I have a dim memory of you using drive imaging, if so, did you stop?

    Hijack This

    Charles,

15 seconds ago I fixed OE by going to Technet and choosing Minimal Install.
Apart from the usual IE items I marked Outlook Express.
No more messages about non-available install-sites etc.
The only item reported was: No validation of VSINET.
I have not yet checked what VSINET is about, but OE is fully functional again.
I have an external Maxtor harddisk but it is not connected to this PC.

    Best regards,
    AdriaanR

    Hi AdriaanR,
I'm not going to be much help in solving your problem but I must say that I have seen the same entries in my own HJT log.I don't know what caused it and I can't remember exactly what I did to fix it but just out of curiosity do you have spywareblaster? If so check to see if the protections have been disabled(all of mine were disabled and could not be enabled).I am running WinXP and my firewall was off and so were automatic updates.I have the IE spyads list and all of the bad sites were gone from restricted sites list in internet properties(which I later had to merge back into the registry). These are just a few of the things I noticed when these entries appeared in my log.Like I said before I'm not much help but I am curious as to what might have caused this.

    Hijack This:

    Hello hllstrHUNTER,

As you will have noticed I solved the problem by downloading and installing
    IE6 SP1 again.
About SpywareBlaster. Well one of the additional things I did
is deleting this program, though I did not experience any problems with the program, but as I already have Adaware I thought maybe they cannot
    hit it off.
    Sofar no Hijack-problems.
However, I'll appreciate to get advise on new subject Win98SE: VMM32.vxd\hpzio100.vxd.

    Thanks and best regards,
    AdriaanR
