I primarily use Netscape but I recently discovered that when I send an email to a friend who uses Outlook he can not see the smilies as an image but instead it is received as the keyboard creation. Not sure this is the correct terminology.

Is there a setting in his Outlook that will correct this?

    Thanks.

    Tools->Options->Read tab.

Make sure "Read all mail as plain text" isn't selected.

vegaspat--I am not really answering your question since I use Outlook Express, not Outlook. But perhaps these comments will help.
If I type "colon followed by end parentheses ", OE does not translate that into a smilie image. As you say, the recipient will just see "colon followed by end parentheses" which is what you see in the typed message.
To get the image into an OE message I have to use Insert|Picture and browse to where I have the image stored on the PC. I suspect Outlook works similarly.
And (still recognizing that my experience is with OE), as Steve R Jones has said, the recipient must not have " "Read all mail as plain text" " checked. Otherwise even the inserted image will not be seen. Further, OE has a setting at the sender's end under Tools|Options|Send tab|HTML Settings where the box "Send pictures with messages" must be checked.

I managed to check my friends PC last night and the" Read all mail as plain text" was not checked.

I will check the latest suggestion "Send pics with message" to see if that works.

I do know that he downloaded some smilies and he can send them to me and I can view them just fine in Netscape. I also sent a message to him from his program and the new smilies came through just fine.

Perhaps there is just some issue sending icons from Netscape to Outlook?

He is using the latest version of Outlook and I am using Netscape 7.2

    Thanks

I need to make a correction.

I checked this morning and my friend is using Outlook Express, V 6. I also check the other suggestion you made and that box was also unchecked.

So, now I don't know where to look. Once again, I am wondering if it is an issue with Netscape and Outlook Express.

I'll try posting a message under the Netscape forum. Perhaps someone there knows something about this issue.

    Thanks.

What do you mean by "keyboard creation? "

Well I can't really do it, but kind of like this. :)

Does that make any sense to you as far as keyboard creation? Some folks can get really creative with their emoticons by using their keyboard.

vegaspat--The Post Reply window on this BBS will translate "colon followed by end parentheses" into the smilie you posted. OE does not--either sending or receiving.
Try clicking one of the smilies to the right of the Post Reply window. You will see the keyboard version of the smilie. But when you Submit Reply you see the smilie in the actual post.
And even on this BBS only certain keyboard smilies are translated. For example, <=) is not.

Yes, I found that out when posting my last message here. When I clicked on a smilie to the right of this screen I got the keyboard creation. But when I viewed my message the icon was there. Gads!! I was going nuts.

I did a test on myself. Sent a message from Netscape with a zillion smilies and when I received the message in OE I received a bunch of characters
Guess my question is answered. It can't be done unless I have my friend download some icons to use.

    Thanks for all the help.

Sure it can. You just have to do it like Jim said. Try this. Find a smiley on this sight. Right click on it and choose "save target as" and then save it to a folder on your hard drive. Now, open OE and start a new email to send to your friend or whoever. Before you do the rest of this make sure the formatting is correct. To do this, in the new message window click the format menu and make sure rich text (html) is selected. Then type a few words and when you get to a spot you want a smiley click the insert menu, then picture and then browse to where you have the smiley stored and select it. If you do this the smiley will be sent with the email and your friend should see it even if he or she doesn't have it on their own hard drive.

If you prefer, you can type the entire email and insert the pictures when you're done. Just click on a spot in the email where you want the smiley and go through the routine mentioned before. Then click on the next spot you want one and do it again. This is the only way it can be done with OE. If you just type it using a colon and parentheses that's what your friend will see regardless of whether or not they have the pic on their computer.

    Zander,

Since I use Netscape, I have the capibilities of sending a smilie because it is built into Messenger. But that is the problem. I insert a smilie into the body of my message and if I send the message to my friend who uses OE he can't see the icon or image. Just the characters created by a keyboard. If I BC the message to myself I can see the icon in Netscape.

Last night I sent a message to myself from Netscape Messenger to Outlook Express. No image, just characters.

That's why I finally decided that it has to be an issue between OE and Netscape and can't figure out why.

    Thanks for your time.:)

Well, it's sort of an issue between the two. The reason it doesn't work in OE is because OE isn't programmed to show smilies when you type a : and ) together. It sees them just as they are. Maybe the next version will do this. Until then, if you want to send smilies to somebody that uses OE, you have to do it the way I explained. My guess is that there's a way to insert pictures in messenger also. I'd have a look and see if you can find something like that in messenger. You should be able to put the smilie in the email just as you would any other picture.
