I've moved your thread to the Netscape & Mozilla forum where you should get more expert assistance on Firefox problems

I had the opposite problem, in a way. Using Firefox1.5 I was allowed ok, but only with two website I was asked if I wanted to save the password.
I have, since then, removed FF1.5 from my computer, for entirely different reasons.
I know that I am overdoing by having several related program, each installed in its own folder, and using different profiles, but there is no way to tell if it is a program problem, unless you can test it with a similar program. IE6 will tell you if you have a general problem, but only something closely related to Firefox will tell you where you stand.
In the meantime, delete Cache, and Cookies, and try again.

    Tom,

When you checked your Preferences/Options, did you check to see if you had perhaps blocked cookies for the websites where you are having the problems?

Try deleting both the cookies and the password (if a password is required) for these sites and try again.

Are you getting an error, or what exactly happens?

I have reverted back to Firefox 1.0.7 because of a specific error which appears each time I use Java or Flash Player.

    Ramona,
I had seen the Java error, with 1.5, however it did not seem to affect anything. But, it may have been a permission type error, since no password was stored. I had even created a new profile, starting from scratch, except for the bookmarks.html.
I gave up, for now, on FF1.5, mainly because of the immoderate memory usage.
I plan to use the same profile when they come up with an update. It will be interesting to see.

    Ramona ...

I've been using FF 1.5 since it was released and have had neither Flash nor Java problems. Any difficulties I've had with the various releases of Firefox have been because I didn't clean the registry of references to older versions before installing newer ones.

Add/Remove removes programs and associated files, but frequently leaves registry entries untouched. Installing a newer version won't necessarily overwrite those older entries, and they can cause problems.

There are numerous registry handling/cleaning programs available, but the one I use is RegSeeker. I'm not saying that using it will solve your problem, but it might.

    Jim,

I took your Registry cleaning advice when you first suggested it, and I use
Registry Ripper from Karen's Power Tools. The Registry was clean as a whistle
so I can definitely lay the problems I had on Firefox.

    Thanks tho!

I pretty much concur. I reinstalled FF1.5, and will keep checking it anyone has complaints, but something happened to it after rc1. Nothing bad, but annoying, nevertheless.
In my case, I block Flash, in a way which I can reverse, and have seen nothing strange there. As reports indicated some people have had some problems, Which others have not. I have been using Registry Cleaner, regularly.

    Tom,

Look for www.cnet.com in your "allowed" cookies, then delete the cookie. It could be corrupt.

    Tom,

Look here for the list of cookies that you allow:

    Tools | Options | Privacy | Cookies
Click on the: "View Cookies" button
In that list you should find the cookie(s) for cnet.com

I checked view cookies & there is no mention of a cnet cookie

    Does that make sense?

I thought when one was on a web site there would be a cookie there

I do understand that, but I'm not sure why you aren't getting a cookie.

I am not as familiar with FF as I should be....
In the Privacy - cookies - center section - under exceptions it a Box "unless I have removed cookies set by the site "
If this box is checked, I take this to mean that if I removed the cookies from list, don't let them set cookie again....

There is a similar box in SM 1.0b - that seems a little clearer to me anyway.....
"Don't allow sites that set removed cookies to set future cookies "

Bottom line - uncheck the box if it is checked...

Does that make any sense ?

    regards:captjlddavis

    Tom,

While you're check on the cookies setting which captjlddavis suggested, look just below the "Unless I have removed cookies set by the site" setting, and ensure that you haven't selected: "Keep cookies: Until I close Firefox "

You said that all settings check out, but didn't specify which settings. Could you elaborate on that, please. It would be most helpful.

Do you have Java enabled? I noted on CNET, that Java is required. That setting is here: Tools | Options | Content

    Check this setting:
    Tools | Clear Private Data
Are you using this setting when you close Firefox, or have you elected to remove any of your private data when closing Firefox?

Try accessing the site with your Firewall disabled. Does that allow a cookie to be set?

Another workaround would be to disable the popup blocker. I have found on numerous news sites that must be done in order to view specific files. Try that also, and see if perhaps a cookie is set in Firefox.

What are the names of the cookies that you are trying to set in Firefox?

    Raoma / Capt

    Capt:

I unchecked the box "unless I have removed cookies set by the site "

    Did not work

I am able to logon to any site with FF even though I removed the cookies

    Ramona

I have it set for keep cookies until they expire

I checked out the instructions on cnet already and did everything they said
    Java is enabled
    Tried Firewall disabled.
    Tried disabled popup blocker

    Tools | Clear Private Data
ask me before clearing private data, the box is checked
    cookies box is unchecked

What are the names of the cookies that you are trying to set in Firefox?
I do not understand this question

"Allow sites to set cookies" box is checked. On "Exceptions. in the "Keep Cookies" line, in the drop down arrow is set to "Until they expire ". In the "Clear Private Data" section, A CHECK mark is in the "Ask me before clearing private data "

Also per advise on BBS,all protocol boxes are checked

I know, this does not make any sense,I can logon to any site with FF except cnet
