I have an explorer pane running up the left side of my monitor on the desktop (yes, the desktop!) that precludes me from dragging & dropping and moving icons. System restore does not work. I believe my OS to be corrupted. (I despise stinking OEM versions!)

Anyone ever encountered such a joyous malady such as this??

I have a screenshot available upon request since this site is not capable of attachments.

    Please advise...

    Hi BruceKrymow
Please do send me the screenshot.
Until then...have you tried right clicking on your taskbar and seeing if an extra toolbar was created?
Are you able to drag this pane elsewhere?

In reference to your other question about the monitor having a 75% display, when you boot up, are you turning your monitor on first? If not, try that.

You did not indicate how you wish to send you a screenshot. This board does not allow uploads.

I do not use toolbars and none are present. The pane cannot be dragged or clicked, nor can you drag any files or icons on the desktop...very weird!

    Please advise

'msconfig' was the first thing I did and nothing was present but anti-virus software and Webshots.

DNA - I have a mobile desktop, a Fujitsu series C 7631 and this start up and splash screen size has gone back and forth and I have not queued a common denominator in the occasions.

This problem was present long before the desktop issue.

BTW - I am from Milwaukee:)

    Hiya Daizy!

This appeared after I installed Ontrack's SystemSuite, one of the best utilities out there.

I uninstalled it and removed the registry keys and links.

    System restore has been unsuccessful.

    What is your initial thought??

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and choose Task Manager. Could you get a screenshot of that?

    • If you see two explorer.exe entries, try shutting down the initial one.

Turn off Active Desktop. You might have an explorer item as an Active content. Display Properties -> Web allows you to turn off Active Desktop.

Try shutting down Web Shots, and try to get more recent, XP-compatible versions of the items that you have in Startup.

Let's see if any of these suggestions work.

    Hi again BruceKrymow
I'm with Ashburrn on this one. It sounds like something terribly simple. By all means send me an email if you want another screenshot posted.

    ASHBURRN~

I have a screenshot to send to Daizy and/or you once I get URL.

I certainly utilized the Task Manager and found nothing to be out of the ordinary, (I assume you wanted to view processes) but there are a couple of executables for which I am not sure.

I do not use active desktop.

The ONLY thing I had in start up was Webshots. I uninstalled it, downloaded the latest version, tried again, then removed it again. I only use XP-signatured software.

(BTW ~ Nice photos & site!)

I am not convinced this is a simple item. I am experiencing some other problems now (which I will leave out of the forum for now) that are unusual in any situation that are leading me to believe the OS is corrupted.

I am backing-up (in which I am experiencing very odd problems - it cannot locate directories that do exist, copies folders empty, and switches windows randomly on its own) the necessities and plan on inevitably reformatting & reinstalling a full retail version of XP Pro, but I would really like to figure this out.

    Thanx, Daizy & Jonathan!

Brian, please don't send me so many e-mails at 1.4MB per mail. Just one will do. Please don't do it again -- it's a hassle downloading all 9 of them.

    Here's Brian's screenshot.

Brian, I'd like to know what explorer1.exe is. Also, MsPSMPv or something like that. It's the third item on the list.

Try logging in as a different user in XP and see if this happens. Make a new account just to be sure that nothing belonging to other users is in that account. That way we can see if it is a problem that exists to all users or just your account.

    Hi Ashburn.....
At a guess.....I'd bet that explorer1.exe is from renaming the start button?
    Like this?
    And mspmspsv.exe is:

    Blatantly ripped off from here.

    ASHBURRN~

    Brian??? It's Bruce.....

:p Please gimme a break. You failed to provide a URL for which I could forward the screenshot you requested.

Copious in initiative, I took a stab at some possible e-mail address variations after visiting your really nice website and garnering your name. I certainly did not, nor would anyone, expect all, much less any, randomly made-up addresses to be valid, ciò fa il senso?

Who in the heck would consider that your DNS would be structured to forward ALL wildcard names+your domain to you? Let me assure you I had no intention of sending you so many e-mails, I undoubtedly understand "just one will do " and by any means, why would I "..do it again "??

Furthermore, I do not understand why you mentioned this in the forum considering you contacted me personally AND I sincerely apologized for the hassle and the taxing of your resources, unless you wish to stroke your ego by making me appear foolish. Both messages were rather condescending. In view of the fact you did not provide an address along with your request and my benevolent enthusiasm, it really wasn't that big of a deal in the first place. Let me apologize once again for any grief I may have put upon you.

Okay, to the business at hand.....

Daizy is right on the money regarding explorer1.exe and my start button. As the screenshot indicates, there is no text on the start button and has been like that for about a year.

She also seems to be correct regarding mspmspsv.exe. (Thanx, Daizy!) and its residence existed out of the box.

The pane nor the properties associated along with it does not exist when logged in as another user. I realized this several days ago and did what I could to alter it by performing a variety of changes connected to the user identities, desktop and settings, but to no avail.

    Conjectures?

    Thanx, Jonathan & Daizy!

    * * * F Y I * * *

As it turns out, the OS was corrupted. Fujitsu confirmed this and after some lengthy discussion up the hierarchy, they subsequently agreed to NextDayAir me a full retail version of WinXPH free of charge. I will probably install that on a rarely used Win98SE desktop tomorrow.

The last few days, this laptop seemed to be deteriorating exponentially. Along with endless error messages of being unable to locate critical files, the cursor began moving on its own, windows would flash like a strobe, the taskbar would completely disappear, CD and floppy would fail to read and/or write, files would randomly empty themselves (or fail to show contents) in addition to the previous problems with the desktop and inability to move icons or drag & drop.

I am glad my lazy butt backed up everything just in time! I would have liked to figure out what was going on for the sake of understanding & knowledge, but I just went ahead and reformatted to NTFS with a clean new XP Pro install and everything is purring like a Porsche!!

Thanks, everyone, for the attempts to help!
