I went to the MS site and didn't find anything on how to upgrade from 98 to 98se. Would this be done automatically, if you went in to their site (specifically, windows update center) on a computer running 98? I have XP, but am trying to find out how you would upgrade to 98se. Again--would you simply go to update.microsoft.com and then have the d/l presented to you when they scanned your computer for the latest upgrades?

You will either have to find a 98SE full or upgrade version disk to do this. You can find many of these at ebay or garage/lawn sales cheap.

In other words, the Second Edition is not a freely available upgrade like the Service Packs for XP? I assumed that it was. I supposed a 98se upgrade would be the cheapest route.

    EDIT:
I just saw the 98se upgrade disks at ebay for 70 bucks. the thought of someone paying 70 dollars to install 98se on their computer is rather unnerving. This is making Ubuntu look really good right now.

I am writing a short column on computer security, and have found that a lot of the spyware progs (even the freeware ones) won't run on the original verison of 98 or 95 (Spybot can tho). I am anticipating that there are a few of these computers that folks would still really like to use, if they could just get them cleaned up from all the junk that's on them. But paying 70 bucks to upgrade to se is a bit much. I didn't find any on amazon. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep on the lookout.

The full version would work just as well upgrading and there is a wide margin of prices at ebay.

    Windows 98SE

Whiskey, thanks for the idea. The full installs are half the price. That's not exactly what you'd expect, but then again there are a lot more of the full installs --supply and demand I guess.

Welshjim--that's interesting. I had no idea that they offered an upgrade and an update (not to be confused with the full install). Given that prices for the clean install are much lower, I'll just recommend that route.

    Thanks again for your replies.
