    Greetings to All !

I am trying to install McAfee into an old Win 98 machine ( donated to my church... ).

I can't get past the "Must install ActiveX" ( or whatever it says ) page.

Nothing that I have done to enable ActiveX has worked.

McAfee now says "contact Microsoft ".

I'd rather have my gall bladder removed. Oh wait, I just had that done a week and a half ago, so I've been working on this project, sitting at the computer, for 6 hours. I hurt. I don't wanna play this game anymore! :)

So... How do I convince the computer that it HAS ActiveX installed. Or, better yet, how do I check and then, if it isn't, how do I install it?

Thanks for any / all help.

    Hello Arthur,

If the Browser is 5.x or greater, it has Active X installed.

Have you been into IE tools > Security tab > Custom Level and checked what the settings are for Active X?

BTW, McAfee is the ONLY security package that uses Active X. Thats one reason I can't stand McAfee and uninstall it wherever I find it, they demand the use of IE's biggest security hole.

If you want to install a security suite, then install Zone Alarm's.

    Regards - Charles

deck--You did not tell us what "McAfee" you wanted to install. But I have tried to cover most bases below.
Following up on what charlesvar has said, you can install the most important parts of a security "suite" for free.
    1) Antivirus--AVG
    http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
    2) Firewall--ZoneAlarm
    http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conte...sp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=staticcomp_za
    3) Spyware Detector--AdAware
    http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
    and/or Microsoft AntiSpyware
    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
    Plus SpywareBlaster
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

    And why not install IE6?
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx
    System requirements here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/evaluation/sysreqs/default.mspx

P.S. Minor matter, since I am sure you figured out that charlesvar's suggestion about IE tools > Security tab > Custom Level should have read IE tools > Internet Options>Security tab > Custom Level .

    Hi Guys!

I have FINALLY found the problem.

Had to repair ActiveX. FINALLY found the right download.

As I type on this machine the one that I've been working on all day is downloding McAfee.

( I will try the suggestions you have given me for other Anti-Virus & Firewall software later... I've used McAfee for what seems like forever and to finish this cleanup project I'm more comfortable in using "what I know "... I will need to test "free" software and install what will work best for the church later this week. )

In my searching I found Macromedia & Flash not working... had to "download" them so I could "remove" them. I have a feeling I'll find a couple more programs taht I'll have to do the same thing to get them off the computer... even though when I've finished, I'll then have to install them again, anyway!

    THANKS to you all !

    Arthur
