When attempting to turn off or restart the computer, I get error messages for applications/processes that fail to terminate. Examples are: dwwin.exe, jusched.exe, opagent.exe, Ioctlsvc.exe and others. What is causing these processes to not terminate and what is the fix? Right now, in order to turn off the computer, I have to manually and sequentially stop these processes before Windows actually shuts down.

Thank you for your suggestion. I installed the User Profile Hive Cleanup and I seem to get fewer error messages on shutdown/restart. On the first restart after the installation, I got the following:

IoctlSvc.exe - Application error. The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to Terminate Program

End Program - bwgo0001241d.ex This program is not responding. End Now.

On the second restart, I only got one error message:

    End Program - bwgo 0000c544.ex

There still must be a problem somewhere.

what is the make/model of the machine? - basically, check the maker's site for specific updates. i THINK the ioctl thingy is sound related but ... could be anything really.

what's in startup? - examine each for updates or caveats. basically determine if u really need such in startup to begin w/. if not, kill it.

Thank you for your reply. My machine is a Dell 9100 with Pentium dual core, 2.8 GHz, 2 GB Ram.

I've used WinTasks Pro to look at the stuff in startup and disabled some of them. This eliminated some of the problem processes at shutdown. I certainly can disable IoctlSvc.exe, but like you, I don't know what it does. I guess disabling it may tell me what it does. I'm still puzzled why Windows XP suddenly has problems with shutting down some processes. Something must be messed up.

read here on ioctlsvc.exe - it's not xp core and CAN be mask for malware ;)

    http://www.file.net/process/ioctlsvc.exe.html

scan u'r system w/ current .dat files. AV, spyware/malware, trojan. if u get clean results, i'll be surprised ;)

u MAY wanna lookkup hijackthis! or such and run and post a log file for those who are expert at diags on such. i'm not much on that end but i DO know that the proper diags from such a log are often the best way to go.

and i'd assume that everything is patched to current? don't forget the dell HW specific stuff. eg - check their site for firmware/chipset updates, bios, yada yada ;)

    and ... reading u'r specs = i have system envy ;)

Skeet is right. Trojans do the most weird things to your machine. As a start, download the free personal version of Lavasoft Adware ( http://www.lavasoft.com/ ), install, update and do a Full scan. It may help...

Thanks for the link to Lavasoft. I just finished running ZoneAlarmPro (virus & spyware) scan and was planning to run Webroot Spy Sweeper. I have these applications on my machine. Do you feel Lavasoft is superior?

    Ger,

To tell you the truth, I experiment with several packages: Lavasoft, Zone Alarm and McAfee Spyware. I found that each one has a different definition and detect things that the other won't. Adware has been a good companion and I never had any conflict with the others. I really can't say which one is the better. Just bear in mind that you must use some discretion and care when allowing them to delete things from your PC.

A good thing to adopt is to check the information about the file they detect. I usually go to their site and read the info they offer. I also never experienced any conflict between those three installed in my machine.
