I just got an AMD 64 bit / ECS mobo system and went to install my W2K on it and get this error:
\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. error code is 4. setup cannot continue

What am I doing wrong? Is there some issue with running 32 bit win on this chip/system? I don't want to use 64 bit mode at this point... just bought the chip for investment protection down the line.. I just want to run all my old SW just as I have been.

Thanks for the help in advance.

There are two MS articles that reference the file ntkrnlmp.exe . (error codes 1 & 7) Both articles mention updating the bios. One mentioned replacing faulty ram.

Yes, it does sound like a hardware problem. Either try updating the BIOS or changing the memory.

32-bit OS runs fine on 64-bit AMD.

Agree it must be a hardware problem. Have 2000 installed on my Asus A8V MoBo without a problem.

    problem was HW - solved!

Thanks to all for their many suggestions and pointers to memtest, etc. The problem was bad RAM (which interestingly enough didnt show up in my old system but w/new mobo/CPU it uncovered this to be an issue. I have not played w/timing/voltage enough to see if maybe this is correctable... in the interest of time i just dropped in 2 new sticks of buffalo ram and it works great. all those pesky windows install errors are gone.

w2K is now installing as i speak, so i may be back with more Q's as i get deeper into this, but for now, thanks to all for the help and pointers.

    Have a great holiday!
