I use a CRT monitor I bought in June '99-- it has the name "Quantex" on it because I bought a Quantex computer then. Lately it's been acting up. At startup, I see a rapid, synchronous and very brief quivering of the left and right edges of the screen. [This only happens in Windows, not in DOS. My OS is Win98 1st Edition. I also have a Linux computer that uses this same monitor.]

The quivering only lasts a second or two. One guy told me to do degaussing. I did that and it didn't help: I still see the very brief quivering. [After the brief quivering stops the monitor seems OK.]

When I start up my Linux computer using this same CRT (this Quantex-named monitor), I also have this brief quivering of the left and right edges. Because this also happens with Linux, I figure the problem has to be a hardware problem.

There's nothing new about the things by or near the monitor: no phone, nor magnet(s), nor anything else new and electrical by the monitor. And the position and location of the monitor have not been changed in the room.

Does it seem that the monitor is dying? Is that what this symptom means?

Yes it sounds like the 6 yearold CRT is gracefully failing, but try a couple of things first:

-If you've a video card/GPU, pull it out and clean its contacts with 99+% isopropyl alcohol or freon and a lintfree rag or chemwipe then reseat it firmly. Likewise with the connector cable (ya' never know :~)

-Track down which video driver it is at http://list.driverguide.com/list/company875/ and reload or update the video driver via Device Manager.
