mrsmith: I believe Jim's advice to run those online scans was directed at me, not you, and in no way with the slightest intention of offending anyone.

In the meantime, I went to the 2o7.net site just to look around for information purposes. I didn't learn much, but I'd like to show you the window that opened when I clicked the "Opt Out" from tracking on their page. See my latest attachment.

I was surprised to learn that you had to accept a cookie for a website not to track you or accept a tracking cookie. What a bunch of nonsense.

Anyhow, I'm through with this subject, and remain pixxd off at JCPenny.

    Take care,

    Martin

martinr121--I am sorry to have put you through all that scanning, but I thought it best that you be sure you did not have any virus or spyware on your PC.
I wish you had not gone to the 2o7.net site and further that you had not OptedOut. I know little about 2o7.net other than they are well known for sending out ads that may contain spyware or tracking cookies. Unfortunately, one of the worst things to do may be to OptOut because then they know your email address.
But I guess you are in no mood to run the scans again.
I am afraid that the JCP ads were a bit of a tempest in a teapot. I suspect cheetahmail is legit, and having some one turn your printer on is not the worst thing. Spyware is much worse and I was only trying to be sure you did not have that. As indicated in one of my earlier messages, while I got cookies by visiting JCP and JCPem, I just deleted them and my spyware scans showed no problems.

mrsmith--I have read my earlier posts to you and I (anyway) cannot see how you would think I was offended. Or that I was trying to offend you.
But if you read them that way, please accept my regrets.
Your post #16 indicated you were getting tracking cookies from 2o7.net when you visited sites whose IP address starts with 207. I was, just as I was with martinr121, suggesting the scans as a way to be sure you were not infected with malware, since I do not have that experience with sites starting with 207.

    Welshjim,
Please accept my appologies for coming off harshly. I am new to this site. It is a first to me to be joining any type of online community. I am only here to try to help. I have helped many in the past by physically getting on computer myself and doing what was needed. if 1 way doesnt work another will. adapt and overcome I say. it is definitly a learning experience for me here. Trying to relay the info to people so they can do it themselves. I forget to mention things sometimes cuz I think everybody knows specific details. If you look at my first post on this site compared to my most recent you will see a big diference. I do NOT know it all and never will. I am sorry if I came across that way in earlier posts. sometimes I have the tendancy to share too much info when expressing my opinion. Anything I do post or say is soley my opinion and nothing more. I will be more carefull as to the information I give out and do appologize to anyone I have offended in doing so.
All I was really trying to say is that they are there and everyone needs to be carefull. please use a GOOD utility for cleanup on your computer and or manually cover yourself no matter who you are. NO ONE is invincible.
    My Regards,
    mrsmith

please refer to post #17 in this thread. it was in fact addressed to me.
I appologize to you for getting involved in this and stirring up whatever.
I am not familliar with the site you posted attachment to. I would definitly follow welshjims advice on staying away from there. I dont believe for a minute what I read in your attachment.
    my regards,
    mrsmith

Jim: I checked out cookie jar, I use a similar program called "Cookie Wall" from AnalogX. it is available for download (free) here.

mrsmith: No apology neccessary, I'm still not sure what you think you did that requires an apology. Don't be so super sensitive. Please continue to post and help out, I can use all the help I can get.

    Take care,

    Martin

martin121--Just to beat this horse to death, and recognizing that I have no experience with 2o7.net, you might want to protect your PC from dangerous sites by setting up a HOSTS file. A HOSTS file completely blocks access by you to the websites in the file as well as blocking access to your PC by those sites.
    The info is here
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
and you can populate it with the use of the Hosts.zip file offered. (The sites blocked are generally acknowledged to either have objectionable content or be the source of malware.)
You will find quite a few 2o7.net sites in it. The contents of the HOSTS file can be easily seen by clicking http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt. But you can also open the installed HOSTS file using Notepad.
P.S. The main downsides to using a HOSTS file are that
    1) it may block a site you want to visit. Your taste does not have to be the same as the person who offers the Hosts.zip file. You can solve that by entering the HOSTS file, putting a # in front of the 127.0.0.1 in the line for that site|File|Save.
    2) you will start to see "Page Cannot be displayed" boxes in websites you visit. That is because the HOSTS file is blocking content from the third party site that would normally fill that box. I doubt you will be missing anything (but see #1 if you really want to see the content). Cheetahmail is not one of the sites blocked. :)

Hello martinr121. I would like to appologize simply because of a statement I made that started something about the 2o7.net tracking cookie. I was only meaning to refer to the possible relevance between the 2 and not what was said.
    and as Welshjim said,
I could go into great detail but will not as I hopefully have learned at least a little from my own mistakes. I will elaborate on a statement I also made about giving too much info by saying that I dont give enough info at the same time.
So all I will really say at this point is that I have had a few "run-ins" with bigname companies in the not to distant past. Namely McAffee and Microsoft. so I no longer allow any updates to be installed without screening them 1st. I thought this had some relevance to your situation because you trusted JCPenny and I trusted Microsoft.
My deepest appologies to you and anyone I offended or startled, freaked out or whatever.
I am only here to help and learn and get out of my own shell.
I would definitly follow Welshjims advice about the hosts file.
    Sincerely,
    Dave

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I think I will not install a hosts file that restricts some access on the web. But I thank you for the recommendation, I see that for some it might be the ideal solution, but for me, anything that further complicates my ability to surf the web is not something I wish to do at this time.

I will instead avoid any sites that appear to be able to run some kind of script without me or any of my security programs being aware.

Again, I thank all those who helped.

    Take care,

    Martin
