This is a new slant on an old problem, very concisely solved 3 years ago by Daizy - i.e., unistalled programs still appear in Add/Remove.
I recently installed Panasonic MotionDV, but using add/remove to uninstall it was not very successful - lots of bits left in and still in add/remove and trying 'remove' again had no effect. I then deleted all the bits I could find AND removed the references in HKLM/Software/microsoft/windows/curr.version/uninstall. On looking at add/remove again the reference to MotionDV was STILL there but with a different icon and no size! It still won't remove, of course.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Add/Remove

Thanks for your thought z4u. Unfortunately I can't reinstall and uninstall as the program was only borrowed and I have returned it!
Also thanks to Steve. There are a few extra points in the references you gave which I shall try.

    Add/Remove

I said this was a new slant on an old problem!
I've tried the suggestions in the ref given by Steve and gon thro HKLM/software/Microsoft/windows/curr.version/uninstall with a toothcomb and done a registry search for 'MotionDV' or 'Panasonic' references and there are none, BUT MotionDV STILL appears in Add/Remove!! where is it getting the string from? The other odd thing is that, as I said, no program size is given and the 'Change/Remove' option is not there.

z4u--Based on what you report, I cannot say if you have totally uninstalled or removed all Registry references to this program, but you should be able to remove it from Add/Remove using this tip
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481

Whoops! Looks pretty similar to Steve R Jones' suggestion.

    Add/Remove

In delving into the registry, altho there is nothing in the ...uninstall key, I found one remaining reference to the non-existant program that appears in add/remove - in HKCR is a key 'MotionDVStudio.Document' with a sub-key of CLSID (usual long alpanum string).
Could this be the cause of problem, and can anyone assure me that it is safe to delete this reference?

There should not be a problem deleting that key.

You could also try to click remove in Add or Remove Programs. XP will note the program is no longer there, and offer you to remove the entry from Add or Remove Programs.

    Add/Remove problems

Thanks for your input Ij50 - I shall backup first, but your comment makes me more confident. I will post a reply if it works.
I could try your suggestion, Arie, BUT the Add/Remove list shows no size for this supposed program, and when clicked does not offer 'Change/Remove'!!

    Add/Remove Problem

I finally solved the problem! I'm not quite sure what did it, but I did a deep search of the registry (having found I was using the Regedit FIND funtion incorrectly - one needs to uncheck the 'match whole string only') and deleted everything labelled PANASONIC/MOTIONDV and, surprise, the rogue entry in Add/Remove has gone!
The 'remove' function does not by any means work fully - it is worth bearing in mind that it leaves LOADS of references in the registry which are a pain to delete but it seems to be worth it.
Merry Christmas to all who offered suggestions. Thanks.
