I have a friend who wants me to help her copy her saved email and address list from AOL to anything else.
I do not use AOL and am not able to figure out how I can find her email and address book to save for her and convert to Outlook Express or some other email program. Once I do that I can get it over to her new PC for her. OS is WIN98SE. AOL version 8.

    Thank You

jorjab--Does your friend want to close the AOL account and use an OE based POP email account with another provider, rather than just reading AOL email in OE?
If so, moving the AOL email and address book is not necessarily free. I believe I have heard that AOL will tell you how to do it if you call their Tech Support, but I have found no reference to that.
Otherwise there are several programs that can be purchased to do this
    http://www.xkee.com/epreserver-download/
    http://www.connectedsw.com/
    http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_do_i_export_my_america_online_aol_address_book_and_email.html
The latter hints at a Free program called AOLLeave, but it seems to handle only the Address Book.
Another free idea (which may or may not work) for transferring the address book is
    http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48
If you can move the Address Book, it should be possible to send all the AOL emails to the new non-AOL email account. That might take time depending on the number of messages but the whole job could be accomplished for free.
Here is a long list of Google references on the subject
    http://www.google.com/search?source...-31,GGLD:en&q=transfer+Aol+address+book+to+OE
Maybe you can find a better method.
P.S. Depending on how hard a negotiator your friend is and how strong the desire is to leave AOL, often voicing a desire to leave AOL may encourage the AOL people to offer a better deal for monthly charges and/or to offer fixes to overcome whatever the annoyances with AOL are.
This is in no way to encourage anyone to stay with AOL. :)

Yes, she is in the process of switching to Verizon DSL and giving up AOL. She does plan to overlap the 2 for a couple of months. She is not extremely PC literate and is getting help from family and friends in the transition process.

I guess the most important thing is to get her address book info and we will do that one way or another. Purchasing a program to help is not an option for her at this time.

I am just trying to help her transfer what AOL specific information she has on her PC, such as the saved emails, address book and favorites. She will be keeping the old PC for a while until we get as much as we can from it.

If worse comes to worse maybe we can at least print out the information for her or copy and paste into some sort of document. Not sure how one goes about finding AOL files with Win Explorer on the PC.

jorjab--Do not forget my suggestion about just forwarding all the AOL mail to the new OE mail account. She can then build her OE sent mail account by sending the selected items from the OE inbox to herself. All very rudimentary, and perhaps time consuming, but it works and is free.
I doubt pasting files will work.
And you can still ask AOL for help. Nothing to lose.

Thanks should have thought of forwarding email - have done that myself in the past. I missed that part of your message.
