MP3 how-to?

Hey,

Not sure I'm in the right topic...if not, pardon me...

I purchased an IRiver T10 mp3 player for my wife for Christmas....

I was going to get her a gift certificate at ITunes for the mp3 player but then IRiver told me that ITunes has their own special format that won't work in a mp3 player.

So my question is....where else can a person legally download music in mp3 format and get a really good selection of different styles--latin, celtic, new age, big band jazz, and so forth?

Is there a piece of software or a method that will allow me to convert ITunes format (given that i paid for the songs) to mp3

A freeware ripper.

MP3 downloads. First try www.mp3.com. There is some good free sample music downloads there being made by upcoming artists, as well as the purchasing the normal popular artist material.
Search for "MP3 downloads ", I think most of the big web-based companies are offering them now, like Yahoo and Ebay.

iTunes to MP3 converter. Search for "itunes MP3 converter ". The iTunes system seems to be a "protected" type (M4P). If you can convert them, I would not know if it breaking rules or regulations, but I would say that your circumstanses are not what they are trying to stop by using the protection.

If your music selection is popular in United States, you'll have good luck here. If popular in other countries, might have to find additional.

The samples at the Walmart site are in a streaming format suitable for Windows media player...are the actual downloads in MP3 format?

No. File downloads are sent in .wma format. This is to assure DRM licensing agreements can be managed.

Your iRiver will play .wma file types. You can legally have copies on 3 computers, create 10 audio CD's burns using WMP for backups, and have unlimited player usage. But to maintain DRM status, Walmart only recommends .wma source files.

If you would like to pursue MP3 file types, check out Legal Mp3 Music Download Sites! Also, contact your ISP. Many ISP's offer legal music downloads. Be aware, many of these services have a monthly subscription fee along with the per song download fee.
