    I've had this problem for about a month and a half where I get an error message. "Sending of message failed, The message could not be sent because connecting to the SMTP server failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections." . . . My OS is Windows XP with SP2, Netscape 7.01. Under Advanced Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings I had (4) four "Outgoing.verizon.net.25 (Default) settings. I edited the prefs.ja and deleted (3) pf them. I have McAfee VirusScan and am not checking my outgoing emails. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else to check or try. If I use Netmail.Verizon.Net I can send my emails or if I use TB I can send okay. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks;

    Larry

    Welcome to the Forum cannon1a!

    cannon1a,

    That error is from your ISP (Verizon) and not Netscape. Have you double checked your settings? I don't have 7.01 installed, and have forgotten the exact location of preferences, but if you have these settings:

    Open Mail & Newsgroups
    Click on: Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
    Scroll down to: Outgoing Server (SMTP)
    If there is an "Advanced" tab, then click on that Tab

    To use the default server, be sure to use
    "always use the default server " instead of the default server (Verizon)
    itself. I think that's the way 7.01 is set up in Preferences

    The string in your prefs.js for your SMTP server should be similar to this one:
    user_pref( "mail.smtp.defaultserver ", "smtp1 ");

    You really need to give some serious thought to upgrading your browser, as it is obsolete. Firefox and Thunderbird are excellent applications, and much more stable, and secure than Netscape 7.01.

    I contacted Verizon originally

    and they dont support NS later than 6.0 07
    I will check my prefs.js and make sure that "smtp" is the default server instead of verizon.

    I tried importing my emails in to TB 1.7 and it will not import emails newer than NS 4.?.

    Thunderbird will import mail for the programs shown in this Screen Shot. This is the
    Thunderbird Import Wizard.

    Import Wizard for TB 1.0.7

    I am running version 1.0.7 of Thunderbird and I don't get the same screen shot as you do, and it doesn't come up as Import Wizard, it comes up as Import and it has listed Communicator 4.X
    Endora
    Outlook
    Outlook Express

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Larry

    You are correct if you do Tools|Import, but if start from scratch, you will get the Import Wizard.
    If all is well, and you are already set up, I suggest that you manually copy the files from NS. and, it would be desirable that you rename files like Inbox and Sent, and then copy the renamed file, and paste them into the Mail account folder of TB. This way you will end up with a folder of old mail, as well as the new stuff. It is a great way to archive your stuff.

    Outgoing Mail

    I hope you people will stick with me, I have cancer and am getting Chemo and Radiation treatments at the same time, they said they would affect me, but I didn't think they would affect my brain.

    I had wiped out my account settings in TB and started over. Under "tools ", "Account Settings ", "Outgoing Server SMTP ", "Server Settings ". Please give me the exact wording if you can. currently I have "SMTP " there, before I edited it I had "Outgoing.verizon.net "

    Thanks again;

    Larryf

    Larry,
    I hope that you get better soon. Your brain is ok, but looking at a link which I turned up , I am not so sure that mine is. So, take a look, if you understand it. Or check with Verizon. whatever setting you have, should be checked in Outlook Express, even if it is done once, since they don't understand any other language.
