When I start to type "Barbara" in the address line of my e-mail --- as soon as I hit the "B," it accesses Barbara and Bruce, which is the second "B" entry in my address book. Anyone have any idea what is causing this and how I fix it?

aks--Just keep typing more of Barbara (like BA). Bruce should disappear.

Thanx for responding, WelshJim. The plot thickens. I removed Barbara and Bruce before you wrote, and the B (whether I keep typing Barbara or not) goes to the next one, which is Barbara Frank.
After I read your note, I re-entered Barbara and Bruce and tried again, typing Barbara all the way. I still get Barbara Frank! So now it's going to the third B!
    Any more ideas?

The way in which I use OE is to have the Contact list showing beneath the Folders pane (View > Layout > Basic > check Contacts) and double click on a name to open a blank message with the recipient's name entered.

    OE address book

Thanks, Pete C. I have the Contacts list open, but I haven't figured out how to send to multiple addresses that way. What am I missing here?

Did you close OE after re-entering that? If not, it might be necessary. I'm not quite sure I understand this though.

    A few questions:
    1. When you type B and get Barbera and Frank, is that one single entry in your address book or is it supposed to be two?
    2. Is Barbera's last name Frank or are they two different people?
    3. When you re-entered her/them, what did you put in the box that says "Display Name" on the name tab of her/their address card.

Whatever you put in the display name field is what OE will go by when you type somebody's name in the "too" field of an email. So, it not showing up could be caused by that field having something different in it than it did before.

More troubles with OE address book

UH-oh, I seem to have more problems. I just tried to send a note to Ross by adding his name in the TO bar, as I always do, and I got a choice between Betty and John --- and Ross! Perhaps I should uninstall OE and reinstall???

See if my post above may be relevant to this. Number three in the list.

    OE and Barbara Frank

Zander, thanx for joining in. Barbara Frank is one person.
Wish I had quoted your message here, 'cause I can't remember what else you asked --- but please read the message I sent a minute ago about Betty and John vs Ross.

    Display name field

    Zander,
    Barbara is "Barbara. "
Barbara Frank is "Barbara Frank. "
Barbara and Bruce is "Barbara and Bruce. "
I just checked these to make sure there aren't any extra spaces or something. Everything looks ok.

Double click on a name in the contacts list - a blank message opens to that name.

Click on the To button to the left of that name - the Address Book opens.

Ctrl click on the other recipients names to select them and then on the To, Cc or Bcc buttons to add to the recipient list.

When you type B and get Barbara Frank, remove Frank from it and when you send the message you should be prompted to choose between Barbara and Bruce and Barbara Frank. That's the way it works for me anyway. You can test this by addressing an email this way and then go to file>send later. It'll be placed in your outbox and you can then open it there to see if it's addressed correctly. Then delete the email from your outbox.

I guess that would be my answer to your first post in this thread. I don't know any other way around it other than Pete's suggestion.
I'm not sure what to make of that. I haven't been able to re-create it. Perhaps a reboot would take care of it?

    Lost addresses!

Ok, now I've done it. The computer shop recently reformatted my hard drive, and the techie left OE off and loaded Outlook on my machine. I had to take it back in for another reason the next day, so I asked him to put OE back on, since that's what I like. Evidently he removed Outlook, which is fine, but he left its address book.

Curious, I opened the Outlook address book and got a "My Contacts" window. There was an opportunity to import my address book from Outlook Express, so I tried that, just for fun. Oops! Program failed and had to close. Oh well, no biggy. I use OE, anyway.

However, next I went to OE to send a message --- and no addresses!!!
I have no idea where they are since they aren't in the Outlook address book (which won't function, obviously because there is no Outlook).

    Oh dear, can someone help?

aks--OE File|Import|Other Address Book. Follow directions.
If that does not work, OE File|Import|Address Book.

    OE address book import

WelshJim, I tried OE file/import/other address book. Nothing listed there looks familiar.
Your second suggestion looks the same as the first???

If the hard drive was formatted and the addresses weren't in Outlook's address book you're probably out of luck. Otherwise, you should be able to import them from Outlook's address book. Export them from there to a csv file and then import them into OE from that. Perhaps the guy that formatted it backed them up somehow? My guess is that he didn't but you might give him a call and ask.

    Thanx

Zander, I'm going to do that --- give that guy a call. Thank you.
