I currently have three boxs, two running Win2000pro,one with Win98SE,networked through a Netgear 4 port hub.Dial up modem is used for internet.I can access all three plus a printer on the network. My problem is with the Win98 box that is set up as a client for ICS.
I have set up the client so that it can only access the internet if the host is connected to the internet.Accessing a connection to the internet on the client(98) is done by opening its browser. No problem there, works great.
The only quirk is that I havent been able to provide a connection icon in the task bar on the client box to monitor activity. Is this even available on 98SE?
Win2000 was very intuitive about this feature and when a connection is made on either the network, the internet or even both,a icon appears showing activity. All feedback is appreciated.

    Does This help?

I haven't worked with either 9X or dial-up for several years now and don't have any way to check so just posted the link for you.

Otherwise, there should be some sort of check box in the networking setup section to specify if you wish the icon to display or not just as there is with 2K.

    nope....

Thanks for the effort though. The client(98) box doesnt have a modem and I cant even run the "Make new connection "wizard just to get the icon.
When you run the ICS wizard it does provide you the option of placing icons by ticking off a box but the wizard is never totally completed because it doesnt see a modem in the box. This factor doesnt seem to effect its abiliaty to use ICS to run as a client though.I would run Win2000 on this box but its older and slower and has a few drivers that never made it out of Win98SE.

Do you have the latest DUN 1.4 version of all the networking pieces for 98? It was released after SE had been around for a while so could have some newer files.

DUN = Dial Up Networking but the upgrade basically updated almost all of the networking pieces and especially the TCP/IP ones.

As a matter of fact I was hoping that an answer lied in an upgrade.Someone has combined all the Win98 updates/patches into one Exe.file download.Iam just waiting for the roads to clear so I can get off this darn mountain and reach my friends broadband connection for a dwnld and burn session:D

Let us know how things work after the updates.

Hard to say what DUN version you have but if it is somehow older than 1.4 you should notice 98 behaving faster and better over your network and internet.

Negative results too. If it works, we can say good. If it fails, we can keep digging around and I'll probably move this to the 98 section since it may be an OS quirk that one of those folks is familiar with.

OK....It,ll be awhile longer though since they are calling for more snow:eek:
Thanks for the DUN14-SE EXE.dwnld.Installed it last night and yes it seems to speed things up on the network end.It also provided VPN.
I also dwnld/installed a little program called tognetlights>http://www.toggle.com/products/netthat at least shows when there is activity on the client side of my network.
Iam begining to think that the only way I can get the Windows icon to show in my task bar is by either installing ICS first or going through the internet connection wizard but can do neither because #1,its set up as a client and#2 there is no modem in the box for it to recoqnize.
    Thanks again for your help.
