I have all the components of MS Office 2003 with the exception of Outlook 2003 installed, plus FrontPage 2003 and am constantly pestered by Windows Update to install this update - which obviously fails to install.

I have Updates set to notify and have hidden the update on MS Update and told the Update Notification icon not to notify me again, yet it comes back time and time again.

Any known workarounds for this mildly irritating problem?

Install Outlook, do the update, don't use Outlook.

Install Outlook, do the update, use Outlook.

The 2nd option would be my suggestion. I've been alternating between OE and Outlook for quite a few versions now and never could quite settle on one over the other since each had it's good and bad points. As of 2003, Outlook wins, hands down.

From looking at the MS KB site, looks like they've issue an update for the Junk Mail Filter about once a month this year...Makes Newt's idea sound preety good..

Also, might consider turning off auto updates since they updates generally only come out on the second Tuesday of the month. (like the three new one ones that came out yesterday)

Then again, you'd think there would be a solution to this:confused:

    Thanks guys

Can't help but feeling that installing Outlook or knocking off Automatic updates - I get emails from MS about updates as no doubt you do too, only circumnavigates the problem and ....
    My feelings exactly :)

I am quite happy and familiar with using OE and Lotus Organiser and don't really want the hassle of Outlook.

Do you have SP2 installed for Office2003?
Have you been to the Office Update site and let it scan your pc?

    Yes & Yes

I went to Office Update again - d/l the update again and it failed to install, of course. This time I sent the error report to MS.

I had the selfsame problem on my old build and on the laptop. Somehow the update installed on the laptop although Outlook is not installed on that either
