I'm trying to install the following updates on my computer with Windows XP Pro SP2:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB896688)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB902400)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB901017)

    They always fail to install.

Things that I have tried so far:

    Renamed catroot2 folder to catroot.dir
    Cleared C:windowsSoftwareDistributionDownload
I have un-installed all of the most recent updates to see if some how they were causing a conflict. They all reinstalled, but for some reason, those three continue to not install.

Any thoughts on things that I can try would be greatly appreciated.

Try putting Windows Update in the Trusted Sites zone. It may be blocked due to IE restrictions.

Also try temporarily disabling your antivirus program before starting the installation.

I have tried everything that I can find, and still those three updates will not install. Everything else installs, but those three will not work for me. Any other things I can try?

xioc1138--Are you getting any error messages?
How do you know the updates have failed to install?
Try running qfecheck.exe from a command prompt.
FWIW--I show KB902400 as successfully installed on the Windows Update page's Installation History. But when I run qfecheck.exe I am told I should install it again. I am trying to figure out just what is going on and must do more studying.
MS is not entirely clear on the subject and makes me wonder if I really want to install KB902400.

    KB896688 fails to install

I am having the same problem with KB896688. I tried autoupdate, then run update and each time (numerous times) I get a failed notice. I tried all the suggestions in the previous posts and nothing will let me run the KB896688 security update. Anymore ideas?

Hmmm ...... ...... I obviously repeated myself ...... ...... I only read the last post.

Anyway, that Cumulative Update to Internet Explorer has been superseeded today by KB905915 which means that the previous one is not needed.

In the december batch was also KB910437 which addresses a problem with Windows Automatic Update.

The december issue of KB890830 found nothing bad in my computer ...... ...... as usual.

Do other updates download and install?
If not you may have to check your BITS(Background Intelligents Transfer Service) service. If you have to start the service and try to run update again.

Also BITS has dependancies 2 other services. I can't remember what they are but BITS will have them listed.

Perhaps a stupid suggestion. Are you sure that somehow the updates were not already installed without your knowing it?
