    Hello Bob,
What sort of "backup info "? What backup program has made the CD?

I have a feeling that it is a boot CD and has it's own Operating System. If so and you run it in Windows, Windows will crash because you cannot run two OSs at the same time.

Tell us more about how the CD was made.

    Matt

Can you fire up the old machine to see if the CD is (still) recognised there?

Some thought from Matt that it may be a boot CD ....

If your boot order is set in Bios to CD-Rom > Floppy > HD it might be worth setting the boot order temporarily to Floppy > HD > CD-Rom and see what happens. If the computer then boots OK does the CD show up in Windows Explorer.

    Another thought .....

Hold down Shift after you put the CD into the drive and hold down until the drive spins up. This will suppress any Autorun on the drive.

Bob, suggestions are getting quite low :)

You could try the disk in another Win XP computer (or a Win 98 computer running EasyCD/DirectCD, although one running other burning software like Nero may read it). That will tell you if your new computer may be having a problem with reading the disk or if the disk itself may be unreadable.

Any scratches or crud on the reading side of the disk? If you want to clean the disk, use a diluted detergent and wipe from the center to the perimeter.
