Sorry I haven't tried software (vaguely remember reading about it). The instructions seem pretty clear and appears to automate the process of manually slipstreaming sp2 into XP. Is it free? (It's free) Give it a whirl, the worst thing that could happen is you make a 'coaster' out of a CDR. :D

I managed to make a slipstream disk (I think) with it, but I haven't tried to install XP with it yet.

One thing puzzles me though. I inserted the disk into the cd drive and the XP install page opened up. I clicked on "Check System Compatibility" and then " Check System Automatically" and then this message showed up....

Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered.

If this was a true slipstream disk, I wouldn't have seen that message would I?

Did you "boot" with the CD in the drive or just run it 'in Windows'? (need to boot with it in the CD drive) That is the message you would get if it didn't work though.

It's not hard to do manually... here's Arie's guide to slipstreaming SP2 http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html

I was in Windows when I inserted it into the drive. Wasn't really trying to install XP, I was just fiddling around with the disk.

You say that message should not have appeared?

I tried that method, but it looks like I need to brush up on my DOS skills to make it work.....I kept getting command prompt errors.

Try putting the disk in your drive and restarting your computer (you don't have to install Windows, you will be offered the option to 'Cancel'). That error message is what you get if you have a newer version of Windows already installed than the one you are trying to install. If I used my 'original' XP-sp1 disk and tried to do an install, that would be error message I would receive because I have sp2 already installed. You won't know if that disk is working properly until you boot with it and see if your system accepts it. As I stated before you can cancel the installation before any changes are made.
With the cmd prompt errors... just be sure to watch for 'spaces'. They need to appear just as they are shown in the article. I've got to be off to work now  I'll check back later.

Still trying to make this work. I found a web site devoted to DOS for beginners, but I still can't get the (merge) box to come up.

It seems rather simple to look at, but there must be more involved to it than meets the eye.

I used the AutoStreamer app about a year ago without a problem to put SP2 into both XP Home and Pro. Done the job perfectly and was easy and painless to use.

Is it necessary to click "Show hidden files and folders" in folder options in order to ensure that all of XP's contents get copied to the harddrive?

I didn't think about this when I was coping files to disk.

If you are just dragging visible files then yes you can miss hidden files. Use Ctrl+A to highlight everything in a folder or window, then any hidden files will also be included, although you may get a message from Windows asking if you do actually want to move the hidden files, or perhaps telling you that you need to unhide files etc first. Can’t actually remember now as it’s been years since I’ve routinely had all files showing and it was probably in Win98 that I saw such messages. Ctrl+A works similar however in XP.

I think I highlighted the files and copied them to disk.....I'll do it again and see what happens.

I tried this with my SP2 disk and I couldn't see any difference in megabyte size. I also opted to show hidden files on the cd but nothing changed or looked any different.

So I am presuming that all of the files were copied to disk the 1st time around.

Can someone check this command line out for me?
    F:\XP_SP2>WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU /integrate:F:\XP_CD

I've tried to do this more than once, but all I ever get is this....

'WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

My version of SP2 was copied to disk from the SP2 cd I received from MS.

I have been trying to follow Arie's example, but I don't know what I am doing wrong.
