My cable connection is not being recognized and when i use the number given by windows to enter the id # on the phone it says its invalid. this is a working version of windows i have on my laptop already.....what can i do to get into windows? Is there any way around this? i cannot access the internet to register/confirm because it wont let me in my user profile w/o doing so.

messtical - Welcome to the Board :)

Can we clarify a point or two ...

How did you reinstall Windows - a clean install with format of the hard drive or a repair install?

Have you reinstalled it on your laptop or to a second computer (not permitted)?

I am surprised that you are being asked to Activate Windows after a repair install - registration is optional. Are you being asked to Activate? With a clean install from a retail CD you have 30 days in which to activate.

Did you use the same copy of Windows that was originally on the computer?

Is this a full installation CD or a Recovery CD - a Recovery CD will format the drive and restore the computer to the state it was in when delivered - none of the software or anything else you installed will exist.

If you are sure that you need to Activate Windows and there is no 'later' button your only option as I see it is to call MS and speak to them. There should be a number on the screen after ....

How many computers are you trying to install this version on.

    still no luck

I now realized i used the xp disc that came with my laptop computer, not the one that came w/ my desktop. I attempted to do a repair install... now i cannot get past my own windows log in screen because if i choose the "later" option it takes me back to the sign in screen. When i call the number that windows gives me it is an automated registration/confirmation number that has no way to get to an operator. VERY frustrated because i use my desktop for most everything and use that for shared access w/ my family as opposed to the abuse on my laptop. Why would windows remember my login screens but not remain set up for my cable connection?

You have me more than a little confused. Have you made another repair install this time using the original XP CD which came with your desktop?

As I posted before you are not required to Activate Windows immediately before you can use it - there is a grace period, so I do not understand why you are seeing the Activate Windows screen at all.

what version of windows came w/ each and what's on each now? i'm talkin home vs pro and what SP level here

either way, it sounds as if u'r NIC is not a 'standard' one recognized by win. this is common. go to the maker's site and get it. got a dell? go to dell.com and lookup u'r drivers per the model and get the NIC drivers

windows will allow u to use any install for 30 days w/o activation so ... even if u are doing this illegally and can't register cuz of that (my guess from what u say), u should still be able to logon.

worst case = do a FULL clean install. my other guess = the version u repaired w/ was not the same (home vs pro) or was pre-service pak. u can get something like 'autostreamer' and setup a full SP installer from u'r orig. find it on google.

FWIW, I upgraded the firmware on my Lite-On CD-RW a few months ago and after I did the required reboot, I was forced to contact Microsoft and enter a special code to unlock XP Home again.

    Have things changed or something?

    .........

I tried to install from a service pack 2 disk....my desktop was an original copy of xp that i had upgraded as often as updates were avail. I still cannot understand why it will not let me past my log in screen w/o registering and confirming. I am given the confirmation number and when i call the phone number provided it says my number is invalid. so i am stuck at my logon screen. cannot make it past. tried to boot up the computer again w/ the install cd in to do a complete reinstall but it still comes up to my log on screen. its a never ending circle.

If I were you, I would call Microsoft's special phone number for activation and see if they can help you. When I was required to reactivate XP after my CD-RW firmware upgrade, the rep stayed with me until XP booted up completely. It took a special code # to unlock XP and the rep was the one that gave it to me.
