I am running windows XP Pro and recently(within the past 2 days) my network will not renew. I am running a linksys cable router with DHCP enabled. When I attempt to renew my IP I get a failure to renew IP and DHCP service unavailable. I can assign a manual IP, however the IP does not "hold ". At first I thought my network card was bad, so I switched it out. The other card does the same thing. I also tried putting these network cards in a different system, they work fine. I am wondering if my TCP\IP Protocols are corrupt, if so how do I go about repairing them.

    Thanks for any help
    Scott

Strange problem indeed. A couple of clarification questions if you would.

Other PCs on the same router/switch are working fine and gretting normal DHCP settings?

Have you tried to set the XP system back to a restore point before the problem started?

When you say the manual IP settings don't hold - do they reset to zeros or to some values other than the ones you put in?

Actually, I fixed the problem, but maby you can help me figure out a better way than re-installing windows XP.

    >Other PCs on the same router/switch are working fine and >gretting normal DHCP settings?
Yep, I have a 98se system, and another XP Pro system and both worked find

    >Have you tried to set the XP system back to a restore point >before the problem started?
I didn't have a restore point to turn back to, however re-installing windows fixed it

    >When you say the manual IP settings don't hold - do they reset >to zeros or to some values other than the ones you put in?
They all would return to zeros, at first I thought it was my NIC, because I had several cheap network cards do that to me, and friends. However when I tried another one, and it did the same thing, I ruled that possibility out.

Ok....so now, I have had to re-install XP to fix this problem, I beleive the problem lied in corrupt TCP\IP Protocol file(s). However, I do not know how to re-install them without re-installing windows. You would think it would work like 98 or something, and let you just uninstall the protocol, but it doesn't. Has anyone else had experience with re-installing TCP\IP protocols. If so, please let me know, this would be very helpful in the furture.

    Thanks

    Scott
