I put my Office XP disk in my CD drive to install a couple of extra components, and windows explorer opens instead of the install program running. When I click on setup.exe, I get an error that says "the installation source for this product is not available. Verify the source exist and that you can access it."
Anybody have any idea whats going on?

after an install of office, u must use the 'add/rem' control panel to 'modify' u'r install. don't run setup.exe at all.

Skeet, I tried that also and get the same error when I click on change. I don't want to click on remove for fear it'll just uninstall without a prompt and than I wont be able to reinstall. Any other ideas? I'm sure I've put that CD in in the past to add items , but not positive.

i wouldn't fear if u've got the orig install cd and it's legit. i'd go as far as total uninstall/reinstall if u cannot do a 'change' to modify.

i'd maybe have a look see at u'r CD setup in devicemanager or such if the drive is the issue but i'd probably opt to clean the CD first ... fingerprints can do things to software ;)

    Floyd,

A note from my sad experience - don't forget to set a Restore point before doing any of the install/uninstall action.

I have a restore point done. thanks. Skeet I have a registered and paid for disk and I've never had the problem before. I also have a backup copy of the CD that I make of all my software in the event the CD gets damaged and they both return the same message as well as Add Remove programs Change selection. I've done this before without problem and the last time I went to the MS update page MS would update Office without a problem and I don't think it will do that if it's a pirated copy.
Does anyone know off hand if there is someplace on the MS page that might have that error explained? Google has nothing.
I also tried 2 different drives. a CD and a DVD drive.
    Thanks again.

Zander, I ended up calling MS and spending 1 1/2 hrs with them and the did direct me to that link and had me download and run msicuu2.exe. After that we still had to do an uninstall and reinstall and all went well. Problem fixed. I really don't think they knew what caused it either. Oh well Now I just have to get busy and reconfigure all my office defaults, menus etc. I hate that. Just when I had everything the way I wanted it.
    Thanks to all that helped.

Glad to hear things worked out for you. You've got some monkey buisness left to do but at least you got it going. The alternative could be a lot worse. ;)
