I installed SW 2005 a few months ago and kept it's definitions current, etc., but have noticed an increasing number of I/Os to my hard drive, even when not online. Of greater concern though, was high modem activity even when I was online but not actively DOING anything to generate traffic..!!?? Can someone tell me what was going on - I use Spybot regularly and therefore hope no data was being shipped out...

Suspected Norton SystemWorks and successfully removed it last week... my old 600Mhz W98 laptop now screams by comparison, and no unexplained modem activity anymore. I've read many comments in this forum about AVG and will use it instead, unless one of you more knowledgeable folk gives me a reason not to?

Avg free version is excellent. Replaced norton on my pc about 2 years ago and it definitely runs better.

I echo Sparrow's comments re. AVG free - running it on the laptop + spare desktop with no problems and also have it running on several friend's computers. Recommended - especially at the price :)

Dumped Norton this year as the subs ran out and now running eTrust AV on the main desktop - another excellent - and relatively inexpensive AV.

Thanks PeteC... I was hoping someone had the answer to the high hard drive i/o activity and/or the high and unexplained comm traffic .... ??

Anyway, going to download the AVG s/w tonight 'cos I feel naked w/o any av running!

Perhaps the comm activity you saw was Norton SystemWorks (NSW) performing automatic downloads of program updates and virus definitions. The NSW you installed from CD probably has had several program updates and virus definitions updates that were released since the CD was produced.

I don't know how often NSW checks for updates with a default install. The virus definitions are usually updated at least once a week (usually Wednesdays).

Mailman - nope, but thanks anyway. I'd been doing regular LiveUpdates but it didn't stop the consuming I/Os.. I agree with you on the variance between the CD and the updated files on the server thopugh... when I first installed it it tokk several MB of 'updates to bring current.. I just get the feeling that the whole NAV suite has become too pervasive in checking all my applications, etc. at every invocation.... and what was more exasperating was that you can't disable internal 'virus protection' beyond the next reboot! Logically one shouldn't have to rescan all apps, etc. if all incoming is being scanned....
