I will be upgrading to a Intel Celeron D @2.9 gig on a Win98SE system. Will use a new MB etc but want to use the original HD, Floppy, DVD, CD RW, Modem etc. Can I install all the components in the new case, then have the original HD programs work. Will I have to remove some of the original MB drivers but leave the modem, cd etc. in place after I start the machine for the first time? If I understand corectly all the components are installed before the first start of the machines new MB and the CMOS\BIOS settings are made? Thank you and please be aware that I may not be able to return to this forum for a short time.

    Hi oldbear,
When you get your new motherboard, depending on the quality of the manual, it should lead you through setting up the motherboard. If you are going to install the CPU/heatsink/fan, take care to follow the instuctions carefully with those. The better known motherboards, like Asus, Abit and MSI have good manuals and step by step instructions. I would not connect the modem or any other "added" hardware until it was tested with just the basics. I would start it for the first time with only the CPU, RAM, video card and a floppy disk drive (with a Win 98 startup floppy in it). If it gets you to an A: prompt, breathe a small sigh of relief.

Regarding the drive with Win 98SE. If you want to try to successfully "migrate" it to the new motherboard, before you shutdown for the last time on the old motherboard, go to Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, go to Device Manager and "remove" any hardware that will not be on the new motherboard...so the only things you may end up not removing are the modem, the optical drives, mouse and maybe the monitor if you are going to keep using that.
Change the drive to the new motherboard, do not start without a startup floppy in the floppy drive or a booting to the Win 98 CD. Run Setup from the Win 98 CD. When you get to the Windows desktop, install the drivers from the motherboard CD, the graphics drivers, then drivers for any hardware that will be new.

BIOS settings, you should only need to change from something like "Setup defaults" to "Optimum Settings" or wording like that.

    Hope it goes well.
    Matt
