My computer keeps trying to download the "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)" but without any luck. It will show that i have 1 critical download but when i try to download it, it says "failed ". It does this when i go to the Windows site i download manually and when automatic updates tries to download it automatically. I think i may have canceled the download half way through it but i am not sure, every other Windows update downloads fine, just this one.
I am running XP Home SP2 & Sygate PF.
    any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Alex

    Hi Alex,

You can also try cleaning out WUTemp and the TIF folders.

WUTemp is a "hidden" folder. Bring up the drive: tools > Folder options > View tab > scroll down: untick "show hidden files and folders ".

One you get the update manually and installed/run per Christer, there is an option on the MS update download page to hide any notification so you won't be bothered by it again.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles!

No need to hide the update. It may take two restarts (runs of windows update client) and the notification will go away. It reads the registry or the update logs in the WINDOWS folder to determine which updates have been installed.

The "hide option" is for those updates that you don't want to install.

    Hi Christer,

You're right - have little experience with WU, like you never use it to install updates :)

I get notification from the yellow shield in the Notification Area. When I have downloaded from Microsoft Download Center and installed, the yellow shield goes away after a restart (or two). My history at Windows Update says "no downloads ".

During the latest two months, I have rescued a few people who normally get the updates automatcally but not so in October and November. Don't ask me why it hasn't worked lately but E-mails from me with the appropriate links to Microsoft Download Center were appreciated.

    alex98uk--WUTemp should be in C:\ .
You have several TIF (Temporary Internet Files) folders (it depends on the number of users) and also a WinXP thing, but you should find the one you want in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings . The easiest way to clean out TIF is IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Delete Files.
