This one has got me. I'm running XP with Norton antivirus 2005 with auto update and latest definitions, Microsoft antispyware beta (with auto update and scan daily), behind a linksys router and DSL. I downloaded Norton's Trojan.Vundo remover tool (log from its action is attached), stopped any file sharing on my network, shut down internet connection, ran the tool (which claimed it had succeeded), rebooted --> no soap. Vundo still there. I have not rerun adaware, but I could if you want me to. I've kinda of trusted in MS antispyware. Mistake?

Did it again. Still no luck. So, I go to the only place I've ever gotten any real help: WindowsBBS. Please help, buddies!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
    • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
    • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
    • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
    • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
      it should look like this

    • At this point press enter one time.
    • Next you will see:

    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpm.dll
    • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
    • Next you will see:

    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\mpqss.dll
    • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
    • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
    • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

      • O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpm.dll
        O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqpm - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpm.dll

    • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
    • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
    • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
    Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
    Click "Options... "
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp! "
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Cookies
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
    Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

When the scan completes, click Save Report and place it on the desktop. Post the contents of that report here, along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Note, that the following two entries show the file as missing . You may want to fix these entries with hijackthis.
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)

Also, if you have not yet done so you should uninstall your current version of java and go to sun and get the new patched version.
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

Only after you have confirmed that your problem has been fixed and you can go online and have no other problems should you disable system restore, reboot and reenabale system restore.

thanks, Newt, for the reply. Did my wife get this through an email attachment or from a malicious site? She uses outlook. Apparently MS anti spyware beta (I've got it resident in memory and set to update daily) won't protect against this one, right? I used to have spybot s&d also running concurrently, but someone on the BBS said that wouldn't add much.

Yeah, I shut off system restore before running Norton's tool.

I tried the manual directions from Norton before posting on the BBS. I couldn't find one of their references with regedit, except this one was similar to what they listed, but because it wasn't exactly the same, I couldn't safely remove it : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ATL.Registrar\CLSID with a hex value different from theirs. I guess there's a later version of Vundo? Son of Vundo? I could post their manual instructions if it would help you. Anything useful in the HJT log? Jon

Did you try the fix posted by oshwyn5 (just above your last reply)? He is lots better with critter killing than I will ever be.

Not really sure how it snuck in on you. I run MS Antispyware resident along with AVG and behind a router without any problems.

Oshwyn, is this HJT log OK now?

Thanks for your time and help. Hope I'm clear now, but let me know if you get time to do so. Jon
