Hello, I hope I'm in the right posting section as I can't tell whether this problem is hardware, software, other, or all 3!

I have a complicated problem and wonder if anyone came across to something similar?:

    1) Since a few months ago, my monitor is taking up to 6 or 7 minutes to come up! Then it stops at this link with this message after which I hit enter and continues on until it opens (I tested it on a neighbor's computer and it worked perfectly - came up in few seconds!):

    "C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEUNT.386 "

"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. "The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. "If you deleted this file on purpose* , try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. "If you still want to use the application associated to this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. "

    (2) This happened around the time I got rid of Norton AV and Norton SystemWorks, and installed AVG instead, so I deleted AVG (didn't find "disable" function) hoping the monitor would now function properly...but it didn't, so I reinstalled AVG.

    (3) I've taken (still taking) ALL measures: delete temps, scandisk, defrag, win updates, ad-aware, spybot (though this one isn't working and I may have to reinstall), etc.

    (4) *Of course I did delete the Norton files on purpose to get rid of it, and also tried to delete C:\progra~1\Symantec\symevnt.386 through the "find" function but it said: "This file does not exist ". I'm hoping that by removing this culprit it might help my "lazy" monitor problem...

    (5) I then tried the add/remove and the closest I found is: "Norton SystemWorks 2000 ". I clicked "remove" and it says: "The wizard cannot automatically remove live update. To remove it, double click add/remove "... BUT, "Live Update" does not appear in the add/remove list so I couldn't remove it...

I anticipate my thanks for any help to resolve this and apologize for the lengthy problem. Adela

P.S. while on the same subject, may I add one more link to delete?

It's yahoo! which is still in add/remove listed as "Yahoo! toolbar ", I clicked on "remove" and it said:
"C:\ progra~1\yahoo!\compa~1\installs\CPN\Ycomp5~1.dll - the system cannot find the path specified ". And the "find" function said (using a shorter link): "The folder 'C:\progra~1\yahoo\compa~1\installs\CPN' doesn't exist. "

Thanks so much, PeteC, for the extensive forum discussion on the same problem I have. I read it all but it'll take me a lot more trying it out. To start I went to System.ini and found only [386Enh] so hesitated to delete since it didn't say "SYMEUNT.386 ". Do you think I can delete it?

Also, I did venture to the registry (following the steps given by precisely Symantec's site in that discussion). Among other steps, it gave a very long list of files or links which it said to delete as all of them had the word "Norton" or "NAV" etc. but I was afraid though I'd LOVE to delete as much as possible! Also I got stuck in some of those steps because my system didn't have whatever they said I should find. I figure I'll have to re-read those discussions and try again... :D Adela

Do not, under any circumstances, delete [386Enh] if you want 98 to run happily :D

Suggest you download RegSeeker and search the Registry for Norton, NAV and Symantec (3 separate searches) - check that 'Backup before deletion' is checked and delete all references to Norton, etc.

Adela, I just went through the same problem. You have unistalled Norton and the system is trying to call symeunt.386 from the registry as it is a "leftover" from the uninstall.

Run "regedit" from Start>Run type in regedit>OK. Click on Edit>Find in the menu bar and type in "symeunt" in the "Find what" box. Click on "find next" button and wait. If it finds the entry for symeunt.386, click on it then right click and delete. Repeat this until "Find" gets to the end of the registry as there may be more than one occurance of symeunt. This should cure the problem of symeunt being called, although I am not sure it will fix the monitor problem.

You should back up your registry before doing the above just in case something goes wrong.

    Hi PeteC and JohnB;

Thank you both for your good advice - they look simpler than those in the discussion board.

Pete, though I'm a "delete-happy" person...I'm REALLY afraid to complicate my life! LOL! So, no, I won't delete that item or any others...And I'll try first the RegSeeker to see if it will do my job for me  but especially because of its "Backup before deletion" function. However, when I went there it shows several different download links. Is any of them ok or should I look for a particular one? (They appear at the end of the screen shots).

...and JohnB, if I can't handle the machine above, I'm going to try your formula, which also sounds easy enough even for a dummy like me! though I'll have to ask how to backup a registry  ...for which I have my Omega 100...(MB?) zip disks.

    Thanks again! :) Adela

Thanks PeteC, and I'm so sorry to be difficult, but when I clicked on this link, it came on my WordPerfect8 and said: "Unsupported Format" when I closed it, another msg said:

    "WPWin Warning:
"The file C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YL3WTWVQ\RegSeeker[1].zip, as specified in the execution parameters, cannot be opened. "

Have any idea what it could be??? Thanks again. Adela

P.S. I didn't receive notice of your reply though I see the proper window is checked here...

That's puzzling :( - the link should have given you a the standard file download box - see below....

Log onto RegSeeker again - the download link is 'DOWNLOAD RegSeeker 1.45 beta (21 languages included !)'

Yes, that's the one, Peter, but it gave the same results when I downloaded it again...Maybe there's another good cleaner to try? Adela

    Let's try one more time :) ....

Log onto the Regseeker URL and right click on the download > Save Target as and save to your hard drive.

One question - do you have an unzipping program installed on your computer such as WinZip (trial here) or Zip Reader from PKzip (freeware)?

In Windows Explorer > Tools > Options > View > File Types which program is associated with .zip files?

Have you tried JohnB's suggestion of searching the Registry?

I have no experience of other Registry cleaners and would rather not recommend a program that I have not used - especially a registry cleaner :)

Hi again Peter. I don't know whether I have a zip file, but I was able to get to File Types which is a long list of files, applications, etc. showing "ZIP File" and it says about this:

    Extension: ZIP
    Content type [MIME]: application/x-zip-compressed
    Opens with: WPWIN8

Would WPWIN8 be associated with the zip files? I tried to open it again with this possible one...but it didn't appear in the dropdown menu...

Clicking on the ie-spyad.exe program on my desktop, it shows a little window called: Winzip-self extractor - would this have something to do with the above? It had a button to unzip, so I pressed it and it said: 13 files have been unzipped, so I hastened to try to open the regcleaner again but...didn't work!

I've followed your suggestion to right click on the download link and saved it to my C drive. I'm sorry for my computer ignorance, but once in the C drive, how do I try to open it?

I haven't tried JohnB's suggestions yet, I was waiting to see if I could use the RegSeeker; however, if I can't, his will be my next try. What makes me nervous is backing up the registry, but I'm grateful you've provided a link which I'll do before trying JohnB's.

Meantime, I'm downloading the ZipReader and will report to you. Thanks so much for your cooperation, PeteC! Adela

It would seem that .zip files are associated with Word Perfect 8 - very strange.
No - some zip files are packed with a self extracting executable file and do not need an unzipping program to extract the files.
Use ZipReader which you say you have downloaded - try a right mouse click on the zip file - there may be some options there to unzip once you have installed ZipReader (there are if WinZip is installed). Alternatively double click the zip file - that may spring ZipReader into action. I do not have that programme installed as I use WinZip.

Success! I now have the RegSeeker file in my desktop: (C:\Windows/Desktop/RegSeeker). In double clicking to open, it shows about 9 folders or icons. The first one is a "Backup" folder, and when I double clicked on it, it showed another small window with this folder alone. How do I get it to work? :D (I almost forgot what this was for originally)... LOL! Thank you again! Adela
