Hi All: Didn't know whether to post this on "networking" or "other software ", but did it here.

Home network with XPhome SP2, works like a charm. All shared files available on each computer. :)

Daughter's computer short on drive space, I decided to do a drive image through the network to my computer which has plenty of space.

Walk through all the DI 7 steps on her computer to back up to a network file, it finds and recognizes file I intend to use on my computer to store the backup, but when I click next to start the backup I get an error message, Access Denied. :( Arrrrgh!!

That folder can be accessed and read from daughters computer, but DI will not write to it. I did the Windows Firewall exception, disabled Zone Alarm, I have enabled "allow users to change my files" on that shared folder. I have (reluctantly) added "all users" to the V2i permissions folder, all to no avail. Have no idea where to go or try next.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

    Take care,

    Martin

Does it work OK if you send to a CD/DVD?

Hey Newt, thanks for the response. Didn't try that, what I did was took my external USB drive and hooked it up to her computer. Backed up there without a problem. (other than elapsed time) Never thought to try CD-DVD, I'm reasonably sure that would work, although she, for the moment, does not have a DVD writer. (on order) Also have an 80GB drive to install on her machine for dedicated scheduled auto backups. As soon as I get around to it.

I could have backed up to any drive on her computer, except for lack of space. This "Access Denied" is definately some kind of DI7/network problem.
    The solution frustratingly elusive.

Reason for all this activity is she is less than cautious on the net and her machine gets loaded with adware/spyware. It's amazing how much stuff gets through all the defenses I have installed. I guess all it takes is a click on the "OK" or "Allow" button. I'm looking to imaging instead of all the cleaning. I guess that's what you can expect from an 11 year old. She is pretty proficient on her machine otherwise.

    You take care,

    Martin

Martin - the CD/DVD was more a matter of making sure the app was working properly and based on what you said, I have to agree it is a pure networking issue of some sort.

If you are planning to use other means for making the images, the networking piece isn't worth the time to troubleshoot but if not, the next thing I'd try is setting up new accounts on both PCs using identical usernames & identical non-blank passwords. Add the accounts to the Admin group on each PC then try the backup when logged on with that account on both machines.

You are probably well aware of it but since you are running XP-home, the account work needs to be done when logged on in safe mode as Administrator.

Hey Newt, thanks for the comeback. I would agree that it is not worth the effort to troubleshoot if I were a normal human being, but it just drives me nuts when something that should work doesn't. That's especially true with these confounding machines.

So, even though I have a couple of alternative means to image her computer, I will slog on attempting to get the network option to work.

Besides that, my experience has been, when in desperate straits, (Aside to Johanna: That means avoiding a clean re-install at all costs! :D ) an option that does not work may be the only one available.

First thing I will try is your suggestion to use the new administrator accounts. I'm glad you mentioned using safe mode for the setup, because if I did know, I forgot.

It'll be a day or so before I try that, I'll post back the results.

    Thanks again,

    Take care,

    Martin

Hi all: Note to Newt: I just haven't gotten around to trying your suggestion, not sure I will, just that alternate backups working OK.

    Take care,

    Martin

LOL - I am probably the worlds biggest, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' fan. If you don't need it, don't waste time trying it.

Yeah, well, maybe one of these days when I got nothing else to do, (right!) or next time I upgrade her machine I'll mess with the new administrator accounts. For now, I'll just kick back and watch the Falcons game, comes on at 9:00

Thanks for the comeback and take care.

    Martin
