    Hi guys,

I wonder if you could help with this...

I had my XP Pro, SP1, with all the MS updates installed, working fine until last Saturday when I decided (silly of me?) to install the SP2.

After dodging a bit in the beggining because I had a different Kernel (due to LogonUI) installed, I found the fix at Microsoft and went on with the install, that finished successfully.

After the startup however, the programs in Startup folder will not start neither will many others that were set to start automatically with Windows. If I start them manually, they are OK.

The tray display less than a third of the icons I had before and the language bar, when I switch language (EN to PT and viceversa) always displays EN even if the keyboard layout changes.

Firewall is disabled and not blocking (I use Zone Alarm) and apparently there are no restrictions. Everything else seems to be working OK (I think).

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers!

ok, i have Xp Home, and i once did the SP1 install, and that messed up my 2 pc's at that time. i un-installed SP1 and went on my merry way for the longest time.

    now, comes along SP2, and i'm thinking.......hmmm.......should i, or shouldn't i go through this B.S. again.............?

well i did, BUT..........i did way more preparations. this time, i cleaned out ALL my temp files, cookies, did a disk clean, system restore clean, defrag, ran spybot/ad-aware/A2Squared/and lastly a virus scan.

when all that was done, i downloaded/instaled SP2, and it all went off without any problems whatsoever.

i can only suggest, un-installing SP2, do the preps as i did, and re-install SP2. as always, turn off all background running programs, maybe even install SP2 in safe mode.

only a few people have had problems with SP2 (from other forums i frequent), and "work-arounds" are usually recommended, which i personally, do not like to work around anything.

    Thanks Pro1Driver,

Yes, I did not mention that but I did the same as you said. I ran my Mcafee, Adware, cleaned with Advanced Uninstaller, cleaned the registry with it and with RegVac, rebooted, checked, everything was OK and working fine. When ready to install SP2, I disabled the Internet, Zone Alarm and Mcafee (I have SP2 on CD) and proceeded... What else could I have missed?

well you didn't miss something, but i did. i cleaned out the system restore and turned it off as well, thinking that even the slightest trace of any virus/trojan/ or whatever could be lurking in there. system restore is great, but it annoy's me when something is backed up in there.

when my SP2 was finally installed, i ran through as many programs as i have, and when all was good, i did another defrag, then i restarted system restore, and created a new restore point.

now, some would say "DO NOT TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE "..........

but, again, this is what I DID to ensure a problem free install of SP2, as i did not want an errant problem is system restore popping up later.

Oh man!... That's something I really forgot to do (although Adware and Mcafee do a good search in there for funny aliens).

I hope someone gives me a solution for this problem otherwise I will restore my 15 days old image and start again. If I do I'll remember your suggestions...

    Cheers!

how did you get SP2, by internet, or by a CD M$ sent you....?

if by internet, you might have a bad download.

personally, i would un-install, do as suggested, and re-install SP2, but that's just me.

but whatever you choose to do, post back with your results (find this original thread of yours) and tell us what you did, etc, etc.

    good luck.

    Thanks mate!

My SP2 is fine, it is the same I have been using for quite a while with my users at the University. It was downloaded by the Uni Novell guys and never had problems with it.

I'll wait for the weekend and then attack it again as you suggested (unless some other solution pops up in the meantime) and certainly keep you posted.

    Cheers!
