    Ns 7

Ramona, Westside :It's been 3 weeks since I was here. Things have been
crazy. I did all you suggested except install Mozilla. Maybe I'm a thick headed
Dutchman, but I like NS7 and want to keep it til NS 8 is given the OK.
Everything is running (even things I never mentioned here) except my
printer which gives me a "communication error ".
I had a virus which I hope is gone. To get back to one of my prior questions: To reinstall NS7 from a CD,
should I install to a new folder? How should I handle my profiles, which are backed up on a USB thumb drive? Everything points to a bad file(s) in NS.

    Joe,

S' OK to be a thick headed Dutchman! ;) If you are certain that you are rid of the virus, and it was removed, then do you still think that Netscape 7 is corrupt? If you do think that Netscape 7's Profile is corrupt, then I would suggest that you follow this procedure:

    Uninstall Netscape 7.0 using Add/Remove

Delete the Netscape folder in Program Files:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
NOTE: If you have added Plugins then save the plugins folder first, although it may be necessary to reinstall some programs.

Move the Profile Name folder to a temp. location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\PROFILENAME
    OR
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\PROFILENAME
    (Depending on your OS)

    REBOOT YOUR PC

Now install Netscape 7.0 from the CD, and create a new Profile
When the Mail Wizard opens, set up your Mail Accounts

    Next: close Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to the new Mail Account folder, and open it

Navigate to the old Mail Account folder, and open it
Rename the files WITHOUT MSF EXTENSIONS, e.g., OLDInbox, OLDTemplates, OLDSent, etc.
Now copy the renamed files from the OLD Mail Account folder, to the new Mail Account folder.

Now open your Mail, and all should be viewable. You can copy the Mail from the OLDInbox, to your new Inbox file, or leave it as it is for an archive.

From the old Profile, also copy these files:
    abook.mab (Address Book)
    history.mab (Collected Addresses)
    bookmarks.html
    cert7.db (Security Certificates)
    cookies.txt
    cookperm.txt (cookie and image permissions)
    custom.dic (Dictionary)
key3.db (Key Database - Certificates, Passwords, etc.)
panels.rdf (Panel displayed in the Sidebar)
    persdict.dat (Netscape Dictionary)
search.rdf (Search Plugins in the Sidebar)
    training.dat (Junk Mail training data)
user.js (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
usercontent.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
userchrome.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)

Do NOT copy these files to the new Profile:
    Cache Folder
    chrome/*.jar file
    downloads.rdf file
    localstore.rdf file
    prefs.js file
    XUL.mfl file

    Passwords:
randomcharacters.s (password data, and will be similar to: 79673512.s)

Open Netscape and access a site which requires a password. This will establish a new password file (randomcharacters.s). Close Netscape.

Paste the password data file from the old Profile into the new profile, then rename the new password file, e.g., Xrandomcharacters.s. Netscape will not use the old password file.

Follow the same procedure for randomcharacters.w (Fill Form Data)

By doing the manual copy and paste rather than the export/import, you will avoid moving any corrupt files from the old Profile.

I'm not certain what you meant, when you said: I like NS7 and want to keep it til NS 8 is given the OK. I have to assume that you aren't aware that Netscape 8.0.3.3 is an Official Release, as have been the last Revisions. This is as good as it gets... Are you aware that this is a standalone browser? If you use Netscape 8, then you will either need to use the Netscape 7 Mail component, or use a standalone Mail Client, if you wish to uninstall Netscape 7.

Ask away if you have further questions.

    NS &.0 won't load

Romana: I know it's been a loooooong time since your reply..Since then I have been trying everything except your last suggestion.

In my Documents & Settings, there are 4 folders: Administrator; Default User; All Users and Joe.

    Admin>Appl Data>Mozilla>Profiles>Default>xxxxx.slt>Cache and Chrome

    Default User>Appl Data> Not much

    All Users>Appl Data> Not much

    Joe>Appl Data>Mozilla>Profiles> (3 Folders):Default, Default User and Joe, plus 2 files (Adbook.mab and profiles.)
The Default folder has a xxxxxx.slt with 52 objects, 8 of which are Cache.
The Default User folder has a xxxxxx.slt with 25 objects.
The Joe folder has a xxxxxxx.slt with 22 objects

Do I need all of them?? If not, which ones can I delete before backing the rest?? How about the cache-delete the?? I just checked my back-ups and it looks like I backed up the Joe with 22 objects and not the Default with 52 objects which I will do as post as I send this.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Joe R.

    Joe,

You will have to wait for a Windows XP user to answer this question, as that is not my OS. Don't do anything yet.

If you're only using one Profile, then no, you don't need anything but the current Profile. The rest can be moved from the Profiles folder. Just save them temporarily, in the event of a problem. For browser maintenance, including maintaining the Cache folders see this page: Preventive Browser Maintenance

If you're unsure which folder has the current Profile data, you can check to see which Profile is in use, two ways:

    1. Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
Scroll down to the "Local directory" field which will contain the path of the current Profile

    2. Open the Mail window, and right click the Inbox
    Select "Copy Folder Location"
Paste into Notepad, and you will see the path to the current Profile

    Joe,
don't even think of deleting anything. Your profile is in the Joe folder, and I have no idea how and why you ended up with three profiles. I have not used 7.0 in ages, so I am not sure how it will go.
I have a few question. What is your definition of "object "? You should have at the most two folders, with the name Cache, and the number of files in the folder is not important. You say eight objects? Are they all in the same .slt folder?
I have 52 objects in one profile, including the Cache, Cache Trash, Mail. ImapMail folders, and a number of files., and 38 in another one. The larger profile has several more accounts set up, and more address books (abook.mab and impab.mab). The first profile is very complex, and I have nine e-mail accounts in it.
At this point I have no idea where you stand. Can you get to your preferences (Edit|Preferences). Can you open, at all your program, and get to mail?
If everything is negative you must create a new profile. Just call it default1.
I will have all the basics. You will have to change your preferences, but it should work as a browser.
Also, do you know if something happened about the time that you first got into trouble. It was over two months ago, but think for a moment.
I am also baffled by the fact that you find three profiles. The default and Default User may be ok, but how did "Joe" get there?

Ramona/Westside:::I cannot load NS or the Mail and Newsgroups, hence I cannot get to Edit l mail & Newsgroups Account Settings. Your #2- same,
OE does not have that option.

Westside: "Objects" is the number of Folders/files on the right side when I click on something on the left side and is shown at the bottom of the screen when "Status Bar is selected from "VIEW" in the top tool bar.

    YES

Thinking back  I was fooling around with Services, Administrator, I used
RFA, Answers that work (The Ultimate Troubleshooter) and maybe a few others. "Joe" is the administrator and how he got there I do not know.

C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\pd5dchcv.slt This is the one with 8 Cache
folders and 44 files (52 objects) and rings a bell as being the one before all this happened. It has the most files of any xxxxxxxxx.slt.

Yes, I think everything is negative. How do I create a new profile and will I
loose my profiles with all my bookmarks, Abook and .s .w. etc.
What do you mean it should work as a browser??

I have already uninstalled my printer and am going to uninstall Norton NIS
and install AVG which is on my desktop.

Thanks again for all the help, Joe R.

I wish I'd be near you. I could fix everything in five minutes.
Ok, let concentrate on the "default" folder. You said something which is physically impossible, or I don't understand it. Eight folders with the the name Cache? It can't be. You may have files within the folder, but not identical folders. The Cache is stored wherever you tell it to, in the Preferences, or by default, in the .slt folder. I, on purpose, changed the location of the Cache. When I had done that, new Cache and Cache.Trash folders were created. I finally deleted all of them (with Netscape closed), and allowed the default location to exist. Only two folders. So, if they are just folders, and, for some reason they have the same name, you can delete them (with Netscape closed).

As for the Profile: Start|All Programs|Netscape7.x|Profile Manager.
If there is an existing profile, listed on the right, try it (or them, if more than one). If there is none, or they don't work properly, click "Create Profile" on the left. Just go on, and change only the name of the profile.
You will not lose anything, but the profile will not not have any information, other than what Netscape gives you.
Contrary to the general belief nothing is lost. It just ain't there. I would go ahead and set up the mail account, and you should be able to get recent mail. Ramona told you how to do it on Sept.10, but I will repeat it.

    Next: close Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to the new Mail Account folder, and open it

Navigate to the old Mail Account folder, and open it
Rename the files WITHOUT MSF EXTENSIONS, e.g., OLDInbox, OLDTemplates, OLDSent, etc.
Now copy the renamed files from the OLD Mail Account folder, to the new Mail Account folder.

Now open your Mail, and all should be viewable. You can copy the Mail from the OLDInbox, to your new Inbox file, or leave it as it is for an archive.

From the old Profile, also copy these files:
    abook.mab (Address Book)
    history.mab (Collected Addresses)
    bookmarks.html
    cert7.db (Security Certificates)
    cookies.txt
    cookperm.txt (cookie and image permissions)
    custom.dic (Dictionary)
key3.db (Key Database - Certificates, Passwords, etc.)
panels.rdf (Panel displayed in the Sidebar)
    persdict.dat (Netscape Dictionary)
search.rdf (Search Plugins in the Sidebar)
    training.dat (Junk Mail training data)
user.js (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
usercontent.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
userchrome.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)

Do NOT copy these files to the new Profile:
    Cache Folder
    chrome/*.jar file
    downloads.rdf file
    localstore.rdf file
    prefs.js file
    XUL.mfl file

    Passwords:
randomcharacters.s (password data, and will be similar to: 79673512.s)

What Rasmona is referring to is what you call your default profile, the one with eight Cache objects.
And, of course, although you said you had "objects ", I may have missed this, but you should have at least a Mail folder, with your mail account. That is for POP mail.
Just do one or two things at a time, or else, you may mess up.
I am hoping that you can follow directions, and clear up this mess.

    NS won't load

Well, finally all is well :) I got PO'd and threw out the dirty water and the baby with it. Since Westsides reply on 10/25 I have been beating my brains out.
2 days ago, I reinstalled XP and in the process Formatted
Had a hard time as the XP install hung up and I had to dig out some old DOS
floppies, booted from them and went from there. Now I will spend the next week reinstalling all my Apps. if I can remember what they were. So far I did NS 7.0,
sorry Ramona  AD-aware , just to get some AV. Now, Spybot, HJT
are next. I have been going thru these posts looking for links that I had bookmarked. I DO have some backups, but the profile problems are gone.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me. Joe R

    Joe,
I would thrown out the baby+bath water, and more long time ago.
I am giving up on any NS7.0 issue, since 7.0 is incredibly out of date. But, it should have not caused the problems you had.
I don't understand this part of your last post: AD-aware , just to get some AV. Now, Spybot, HJT
Adaware and Spybot do not have any AntiVirus. They are, presumably, anti-spyware, but I have never see them do anything useful, unless you are an Internet Explorer user.
