I have just downloaded netscape 4.79 and I have no notice of new email---In the lower right hand corner by address book and composer you find the little envelope with the arrow beside it---It shows yellow but never turns to green when new mail has come in---It's not a big thing but would like to know what to do for it to show new mail ---Any suggestions----Thanks
That's the only problem I see with the download--

    Hi Connor,

    In Edit|Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups|Mail Servers

Click on the "Edit" tab. Did you configure your mail preferences there?

If not, I would suggest checking for mail every 10 minutes

    Remember Password

    Automatically download any new messages.

You should then see the green arrow when new mail arrives in your Inbox.

You might use a sound as well, as it's fun and there are some great .wav files out there.

Post back if you have questions.

    Ramona :D

    Connor,

One more thing to check, as the yellow envelope does indicate new, unread mail!

Have you by chance configured Messenger to leave mail on the server? Check here:

    Edit|Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups|Mail Servers

    Click on the "Edit" tab
    Click on the "POP" tab

If there is a tick beside "Leave messages on server" then deselect.

Let us know if this solves your problem.

Romona--There is no tick beside leave message on server---No tick in either square--Advise please-
Still no little green arrow when there is new mail to read-
I thought the yellow arrow indicated no mail and the green arrow indicated new mail to read--- Maybe I'm wrong in the way I look at the arrow--Perhaps you can explain what the yellow signifies and what the green signifies--Thanks

    Hi Connor,

Well, we're getting our arrows and envelopes confused here. I was saying that a yellow envelope indicates unread mail, but yes, the yellow arrow should turn green when new mail is received.

    See if this helps:

With Netscape closed, open Windows Explorer:

    Look in C:\Windows
    Navigate to the nsreg.dat file.
    Rename the file nsreg.bak

    Restart Netscape
The Profile Manager will prompt for a new User Profile

Use the same name as your current profile

Let us know if this helps.

    Hi Connor,

You're coming through loud and clear. Don't apologize for inexperience! We all have been where you are, trust me, and there is no such animal as a "dunce" on this Forum. Believe me, I learn something new every day.

    O.K. . .

Windows Explorer is your Windows directory. You should have an icon on your Desktop, a yellow file folder with a magnifying glass overlaid on the folder. It should say "Explorer ". This is not Internet Explorer, which is the MS browser.

    With Netscape closed...

Double click on the Explorer icon.

    Highlight C:\

    Scroll down to C:\Windows

    In the C:\Windows folder
scroll down to the nsreg.dat file.

    Rename the file nsreg.bak

    Restart Netscape

The Profile Manager will prompt for a new User Profile (i.e. a window will pop up asking for a new profile name)

Use the same name as your current profile

Feel free to ask more questions if this isn't perfectly clear to you.

What the above step does, is create a new Netscape Registry. I think your Registry has become corrupt, so we are going to let Netscape rebuild the Registry. This is done automatically, when the nsreg.dat file is renamed, or deleted. A clean Registry often clears up problems in Messenger.

O.K., that's no problem. We'll get to Explorer another way.

Look on your keyboard - bottom row - space bar

To the right of the space bar - the second key to the right has the Windows symbol. This is the "Windows" key. It can be used for many shortcuts.

Press the Windows key and the letter "E ". This will open Windows Explorer.

Another method to open Explorer is:

Press on Start | Programs | Windows Explorer

Lemmeno if you have more problems

    Ramona ;)

    Hi Connor,

Don't get discouraged, you're doing fine.

With the windows key and letter E I got about 10 copies of my computer one on top of the other

You probably just held down the "E" too long. My Computer "C" is the same thing as Windows Explorer.

Double click on the "C:\ "
    Double click on "Windows "
Scroll down to the nsreg.dat file
Rename it, as described in my earlier instructions.

What Version of Windows do you have? Windows98, ME, or XP? Just curious.

    reply email notice

I've located the file in windows but it is only
nsreg.dat not nsreg.dat---You say use the same name as my current profile---I'm not sure what you mean and what my current proflie is or how I determine what it is---Is nsreg the same as nsreg.dat---I really don't feel safe clicking around in that area--so far so good though---

    Hi Connor,

Way to go! You're getting there, and to answer your questions....

The reason you aren't seeing the full file name (only nsreg) is because you have disabled the "Show All Files" in My Computer properties.

    Do this:

    Open My Computer
    Click on "View "
    Click on "Folder Options "
    Click on "View "

    Under "Files and Folders"
Put a tick in the Radio Button beside:
    "Show All Files "

You have probably selected, or the default is:
    Do not show hidden files
Do not show hidden or system files

You will need the "Show All Files" enabled when you are looking for system or hidden files (.dll, etc.) Once you have made your edit, it's a good idea to re enable "Do not show hidden files ".

Once you enable "Show All Files" go to C:\Windows and then you will see the full file name, nsreg.dat.

    Rename it to nsreg.bak
    -------

    Your current profile name.....

That is the "User" name that you selected, when you first set up Netscape. It is located here:

C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\ (the User name you selected)

When you restart Netscape you will be asked to create a new User profile. Give the same User name that is already in this folder:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\ (the User name you selected)

If this isn't clear, lemmeno! :D

    For closure.....

Connor posted his "green arrow" problem on another BBS. I suggested another possible solution, as follows:

Here is something else you can try:

Back up your Users folder (copy it to another folder on your HD)

    With Netscape closed:
Rename your Inbox file the one with NO .snm extension to OldInbox
It is located in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername\Mail

Open Netscape and see if your Inbox is working...send yourself an email
If the green arrow appears, then it's fixed

You can then, from within Messenger, copy the mail in the OldInbox to the Inbox. Then you can delete the OldInbox folder.

Let us know if this works.

    Ramona
    ---------

Well so far nothing Iv'e tried has inspired the little green arrow to show and do what it's supposed to do---I'm going to forget it for a while and find some other problem to bother you with---Thanks for all the effort and time you have spent trying to solve my problem--Iv'e kept all the information and will get back to the problem sometime later--Thanks again.
