I have a problem with a mates computer. His hard disk crashed, and we have replaced the hard disk. He only has win 95 and win 98 upgrade. Win 95 loaded OK, but on first boot after loading we get the following message.

    Insufficient memory to initialize windows.

Quite one or more memory - resident programs, or remove unneccessaqry utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and restart your computer.

The system is running an AMD 1200 mhz processor, and 512 mb of ram. Can anybody please advise what may be causing this problem.

Win95 doesn't like large amounts of memory. You may have to reduce the total memory to 256MB or below. I have seen problems with over 64MB of memory with Win95 during installs. Once you upgrade to Win98 then the 512MB shouldn't be an issue. Anything over 512MB with Win98 requires some tweaking of the System.ini file.

The easier way around this would be to format the drive, and install the Win98 Upgrade first, it will do this. During the installation, you will be prompted for proof of a previous version. Swap the 98 CD for the 95 CD, and then Browse to the Win95 folder. Win98's setup will examine the folder and then continue with the installation.
