for a totally unknown reason my WD hdd becme defective
the hdd drive is 20gb and has been used aprox for 1 year

now the computer recognises this drive as an 8GB drive and i cannot see the drive letter in My computer

i've tried some diagnostic tool from WD but all i get is a failed MSG

is there any possibility to recover some of the files on that HDD as i need them urgently

    any help would be appreciated

    Hello arty,

    You can try two things:

Running a Chkdisk http://www.pegasus-afs.com/eSupport/using_CHKDSK.htm the link has the syntax for the various options. Are you able to boot? If not, you're going to have to use the Recovery Console - provided you have a install XP cd.

Or hook up the drive to another system as a slave drive and try to get your data off that way.

i already have hooked it up on another system
at first the drive didn't show up in My Computer now it does but it has a big question mark and i can't access it

i've just installed partition table doctor
and it says that it's a bad drive and that it doesn't have partition
i've just pressed rebuild partition on that util to see what will happen

    any other clues?

    Hi arty,

    Did you try running chkdisk?

Outside of that, I don't think you can do anything on your own. Depending on how important the data is, either disk recovery software or professional data recovery services are available.

    Hi arty,

I don't because I don't know of a specific one. Others here do know of such software, so wait for more replies.
