I would like to get the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) to run at boot up. How would I accomplish that?

You can place an icon for the CPU meter in your system tray every time you reboot regardless of which user is currently logged on to the computer.
Perform a search on your computer and locate TASKMAN.exe.
Right click the application, point to Send To, and click Desktop (create shortcut).
Right click the shortcut on your desktop. From the Shortcut tab, change the Run: option to Minimized.
    Click OK.
Right click the shortcut and click Cut.
Right click the Start Menu and click Open All Users. Open the Programs \ Startup folder and paste the shortcut.
Right click the Taskbar and click Task Manager.
From the Options menu, place a check beside Minimize on use and Hide when minimized.
Minimize the Windows Task Manager dialog box.
An icon in your system tray will now appear for the CPU Meter.

    June,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I followed your instructions to a "T ". In the first computer I got the cpu meter but on reboot it did not appear even tho taskman.exe is checked in msconfig.

On the second computer (brand new xp-home sp2) I did not get the cpu meter and on boot up, nothing showed even tho taskman.exe showed in msconfig. ALSO if I do a Cntl+Alt+Del I get the dialog/display but NO cpu meter.

    Help!

    robls99,

    Follow June's instructions again.
But, this time change the Target line in the shortcut to C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe instead.

If all you want to accomplish is having a CPU meter in your Systray at boot, consider getting Process Explorer.

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Process Explorer doesn't require any installation. Just create a new folder anywhere and extract the entire contents of the zip file into that folder.

Next is to create a shortcut to procexp.exe in your Startup folder.

Lastly, go to the properties of that new shortcut and change Run to minimized.

    Reboot your computer.

You will now be seeing a CPU meter in realtime in your Systray.

In my Startup folder when I right click taskmgr the Properties has
    Target: %windir%\system32\taskmgr.exe
    Start in: %windir%

Sorry this didn't work for you. I enjoy having this icon by my clock to easily refer to. Computers can be a nuisance.

Thank you both for your help.

Before I try the taskmgr.exe in System32, I wanted to restore both computers to the original config so I deleted the taskman.exe in the Programs\Startup folder where I had pasted it.

When I do a Cntl+Alt+Del in my old cpu I get the proper dialog box (Process, etc), and when I minimize it I get the cpu meter in the SysTray as before.

However, in my brand new cpu I don't get the cpu meter when I minimize the dialog. To tell you the truth I am not sure I tried it previously before I started all this but I think I did see the meter at one point. My Options are set at:

    Always on top
    Minimize on use

In the SysTray I unchecked Hide inactive icons.

Any idea how I can get back the cpu meter in the systray?

Windows Task Manager | Options - all three are checked on mine
    Always on top
    Minimize on use
    Hide when minimize

I wish I could solve this mystery but I haven't a clue why it didn't work for you. Sorry!!!
