I have read in a couple locations (Win XP News) that MS has a fix for this problem but I cannot find it. It appears that you must pay the $35 fee to get it fixed. I have had the problem for some time but it is getting worse. When you click on a link IE 6 just shuts down as if you hit the close button.

Read Article ID : 899947. The info suggests that this only happens with XP. It would be nice if the fix were available for download.

    Any ideas?

NOLA3716--The MS article you mention says there is a fix for this problem, but only in very specific circumstances
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899947/EN-US/
and MS will not charge you for a hotfix if these circumstances apply to you.
Do these circumstances apply to you?
It also seems that if you have updated to WinXP SP2 you should not have the problem.
What version of Windows are you running? If you are not running any version of WinXP, please supply more details, like are you getting any error messages, what browser (and version) are you using, does this problem occur when you try to reach any website or just some, etc.?

    Got it all!

I am running the latest and greatest offered by MS. This problem started about six months ago and includes, now about 5% of the sites I visit. There is no pattern that I can recognize except that it seems to always be a link. Last evening I was looking at a web site and when I clicked on a link IE shut down. I retried several times just to be sure and that was when I tried the BBS. Please assume that I have installed all security and updates on my machine. I have a gig of memory and at least 200 gig of spare disk space. My processor is running at about 2167ghz. I also keep my machine clean of spy-ware and use Norton Internet security, updated every day. I use the latest IE6 and I am connected via cable modem through a router firewall @ about 750megs.

What I am looking for from your page is information about other software that might cause this problem. This could extend to hardware and drivers. If MS is offering a hot fix then they must know what causes the problem. The article does not give any such info. My question to them is why not tell the whole story so I can fix it.

    Any ideas?

    As I said!

I have down loaded all of the updates that MS offers for Win XP. I even went so far as to order the CD for the sp2. I do not know how to explain that I always update immediately. I also use all the latest security software and equipment. I have XP set for auto update and I still go the the MS web site to check for other updates. What more may I say to convince you all that I have not skipped over any updates of any kind. That includes Internet Explorer. So, unless you can give some other explanation, I must assume that I have another problem that acts very much like the one that was supposedly fixed.

    Any Ideas?

Just tried to make sure that you had SP2 installed.

Only other idea I'd have is to try and Repair Internet Explorer

    Thanks

I had run "SFC" early on but I will try again. Of course I won't know until, who knows when if it worked. If you come up with any more ideas please let me know I will check this post from time to time to see if anything new appears. If you have any idea what may be corrupting the OS or know where I might look for info, that would be great. I must admit I try new stuff all the time and I probably do it myself (like the problem with Adobe Reader 7), etc.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hello NOLA3716,

Worth a shot to see if any of the BHO's are giving you problems:

    IE > tools > manage Add-ons.

A number of ways to approch this:

You can disable them all and re-enable one at a time.

You can disable one at a time.

    Regards - Charles
