    Hi All,

Here's my problem. I have the mouse that came with my Dell Dimension 2400 PC that's no longer working.

First, I need to tell you that I installed a "Kensington PocketMouse Pro" mouse on the PC that I've been using for some time. It's a wireless mouse. The other day when my batteries ran low on the Kensington wireless mouse, I unplugged the small receiver from the USB port and then plugged the cord for the original mouse back into the PC. I'm 99.99% sure I plugged it into the correct socket -- right next to the keyboard. But the mouse did nothing.

By nothing I mean.... well, it literally did nothing. The pointer on the screen is totally unresponsive -- will not move or do anything. It's almost as if the system doesn't know it's plugged in.

Is there a setting that I'm missing? I've gone to control panel and clicked on "mouse" to bring up the mouse settings box. Then clicked on "hardware" where I'm told that "this device is working properly." Well, of course it ain't. . .

Any help or guidance would be appreciated. While I plan to continue using the wireless mouse, I'd still like to have the option of using the original one if needed.

Thanks in advance for any help you give (or even try to give)!

    Jim M.

If you plugged the mouse into the PS/2 port, You will have to reboot for it to be recognized.

BeenBit--Have you rebooted since plugging in the new (old) mouse? (EDIT--Whoops, I now see that Bmoore already suggested that. :( )
There really is no right USB port to use for plugging in a mouse, assuming
    1) the mouse is a USB mouse
    2) the port is working. (sometimes USB ports die--you could test some other piece of USB equipment on the same port, like perhaps a flash drive)
Another possibility is that the old mouse is no longer working after a long break. If you have another PC, try it there. Some ball mouses have rubber bands around the internal rollers that can deteriorate. Or clean the mouse.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. The rebooting did the trick. The mouse is working fine now.

    :)

Try locating an SMBus Controller, I would get that same problem. Check under device management in the System Properties dialogue. If it says "SmBus Controller" Go to dell tech support or use your drivers CD that came with your computer.
