Hi, I have a friend who has Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180). And his computer seems to bog down after awhile. Like over two weeks or so. The first time I seemed to fix it I did it by installing the most current Java Controler, it worked fine for awhile, but then did it again. He is running Norton Anti-virus corp edition and no viruses have been found. I tested the cable speeds and they are fine. In order for me to get his system back to good speed today I had to do a system restore to the date that I had originally installed the Java Controler. Now, I uninstalled and reinstalled that controler by itself today but it didnt do anything so I think that it having a positive effect back two weeks about was an indirect result

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I will paste a copy of his HJlog, but Ive been told, in the spyware removal forum that it looks pretty good.

Have you cleared out the Temporary Internet files and checked the amount of disk space allocated to TIF's? The default is way too large - 50 - 100Mb is more than enough.

Also a good idea to set up IE to empty TIF files at shutdown ....

Internet Options > Advanced and scroll down to Security and check ' Empty Temporary Files folder when browser closed'.

I also get better results with history set to retain zero days. It is then supposed to only keep current session history and flush it when I close all browser windows. This only makes sense if you don't tend to use the 'history' data to get back to previously visited sites but in any case, the default of 20 days is way too long.

I also find that when I'm having sludge during a session, emptying TIF & history, closing all browser windows (to complete these removals), doing from a start->run line, ipconfig /flushdns and opening a browser window again has cured the sludge for a while.
