I have an OEM version with a full Windows XP (install CD,I think).
    (The error)
"This is caused by the fact that your Windows XP CD contains updates that will be automatically installed when you run setup. This type of CD's will usually be from larger OEM suppliers (like Dell, HP, or others). "

    How do I know ?

    i386 after slipstreaming

Is the i386 in the slipstream CD made, the same as the one on the original Windows install CD (XPSP1) ? I understand that these are system files. Does anything in i386 change in SP2? I'm guessing not since the original XP install CD is used to run SFC. Right?

    Wrong.

Many files are changed in i386. If you run SFC, it's clever enough to get these changed files from the /dllcache folder.

    Hi Arie,

Is this the location you're speaking of? C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

I had put the i386 files from my Windows Home Edition SP1 Install CD
    on the hard drive C:\I386
And modified the registry source path from D drive (CDROM)

    to: HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath C:\

    and: HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath
    C:\

So, I don't need to change these because sfc is smart enough to look in
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 Yes?

Sorry Arie, I  I'm still on a learning curve.

Just read: Description of the Windows File Protection Feature

System File Checker gives you the ability to scan all protected files to verify their versions. If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the cache folder (%Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache) or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file. System File Checker also checks and repopulates the cache folder.

As an example, the recent Windows XP Hotfix - KB896424 updated the system files gdi32.dll & win32k.sys. A new version of the files was placed in %windir%\system32 and a copy in the cache %windir%\system32\dllcache A copy of the old system files is archived in %windir%\$NtUninstallKB896424$

I also know that some (all?) are copied to the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ folder. This folder was added in Windows XP SP2, but I haven't found any info if SFC is looking in there too.

Ok good example , Lets say for instance if I was to download this file gdi32.dll and later on it got corrupted some how , How would SFC correct it ? I mean I wouldn't have it stored on disk , So the place it does get stored from the download would it also be corrupted ?

It would restore a copy from the dll cache %windir%\system32\dllcache.

You can never say never, but the chance of it happening is remote, since files from the dll cache aren't accessed on a daily basis.

Okay then good enough , Thanks , Its to bad though that SFC doesn't show any log after its been done , It would be nice to see as to what it does or doesn't do ...
