I've got Limeware P2P software on my PC & it loads when I start windows. I don't want it to. I've looked in msconfig---->startup but I can't find it anywhere. Also, when I close it down, it starts up again a few seconds later. I like the program & don't want to remove it completely, but I want it to run when I choose to run it & stop completely when I close it. Does anyone know how, or if, I can sort this out? It's driving me mental!

    Hello DoctorBeaver,

    Try Autoruns:

    Hello again,

I don't use Limewire and didn't what it was, so I did a search.

This may be of interest to you: http://www.mp3newswire.net/stories/2002/cleanlimewire.html

From that website, I gather that Limewire has adware/spyware in it, that may explain why it doesn't want to be shut down.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for that. I've got a utility similar to the 1 you recommended. It's from Mike Lin & shows all the stuff you mentioned. Unfortunately it doesn't show LimeWire anywhere.
I'd already found that Clean LimeWare article but that program is no longer available.

    Hi DoctorBeaver,

I'm familiar with Mike Lin's great utility, but autoruns is better yet, and I think you ought to give it a go - worth a shot.

Its not an install, its an execute and run.

    Regards - Charles

Do Start > Run > Services.msc and check for a running Service.

    Tried all that

I've tried Autoruns, Mike Lin's utility, StartupMonitor, a2HijackFree, RegisterMonitor - none of them come up with LimeWire. I reckon it must be under a different name & I don't know enough about XP to know what's what.
The only way I can stop it is by moving the .exe to a different folder & then restoring it when I want to use it. Pain in the butt but it works.
    Thanks for your help anyway

Do you see anything named PAagent or PAagent.exe. If so, try disabling it. Then click on the link below to find out how to get rid of it completely. Your limewire program may or maynot work without it. I don't know. Sometimes adware programs are tied to the adware and won't work without it installed.

One more I forgot. Check for adp.exe. If it's there, kill it.

Download Hijackthis and unzip it to a normal folder (not temp, not desktop). Run a 'scan and create log' then post the log file here.

    No offence intended

I'd rather not post something like that log in a public place. No offence to yourself, but I don't know you or anyone else here; & as I don't really know the meaning of the entries in that log, I don't know if it contains info that someone could use to remotely get into my computer.
I've more-or-less sorted the problem by deleting the .exe then restoring it from another dir. Not very satisfactory but it works. Thanks anyway.
