    Error when using IE

Hello all. Every time I open up IE, I get greeted by this message:

... This happens every single time. I don't even have chance to get to my favorites without it coming up. I can still use the Internet, and send this by moving the dialog box out of the way but it's frustrating. Clicking 'Don't Send' and 'Send Error Report' just close the pages down and it happens again. Clicking 'Debug' closes down and the same. I have no other programs running. I have cleared TEMP files to no effect, have all available updates. I'm using Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

    Thanks in advance.

Whenever Internet Explorer starts having problems, the first thing to suspect is spyware.

Good, free spyware removal tools are Windows AntiSpyware (2000 and XP only), Spybot, Ad-Aware and Ewido.

First go to this page and download WinSock XP Fix. You may not need it but if you do, you won't be able to get online to get it. Remember where you saved it.

Download at least two of them since each tends to find things the others miss. Install, immediately update and run the scans one at a time. Let them remove all they find.

If you find you can't get online after removing the spyware, run the Winsock fix you downloaded earlier to repair the damage left behind by the spyware.

Why not just diasable error reporting by doing the following:

    1. Right-click on My Computer, and choose Properties.

    2. Click the Advanced tab on your System Properties dialog box.

    3. Click the Error Reporting button on the Advanced tab.

    4. On the Error Reporting dialog box, place a checkmark next to the

text labeled, "Disable error reporting. "

    5. Leave the other radio button unchecked next to the text labeled,

"But notify me when critical errors occur. "

    6. Click OK.

I suggest that you do not disable error reporting. It is there for a very good reason. It is telling you that something is wrong. And that is what it is there for.

I myself can not help in this case but I am sure that someone can.

But I am quite sure that the error is telling you that it can't find the file on the Internet. So I think it would be better find the request is coming from and illiminate it.

I just tried it and it brings up and image mentioning Merriam-Webster Online.

You say this happens EVERY time you open IE.

Could it be possible that you have accidently set it as you home page ?

Merriam Webster's is my homepage that I have set. It's been like that for way over a year. It's still doing it now. This time it brought up this when I first opened IE and then it goes back to the other error:

    Error

... I'm going to run a SpyWare program now and I'll see what that says. Also, I've noted that I don't get the error if I click on a link and it brings it up in a new window. Just if I open it.

I've just ran three different anti-Spyware programs and all of them found different things. I've cleaned it all up but I'm still getting the same problem. I now get it if I open up Windows Media Player, or go to My Computer. If I have a program running like a Spyware program, it will sometimes bring it up that the programs needs to end. I haven't installed anything recently so I don't have a clue what it could be.

I suggest you post a HijackThis log ....

Download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature, save it to a folder , say C:\HJT, on your hard drive - not to the Desktop or a temporary location, run it and post the log here.

You might also try running IEFix

Apart from some missing files my inexperienced eye sees no major problems here. Nevertheless I have moved this thread to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum for an expert view.

In the meantime it would be worth running System File Checker - I am assuming that you are running XP (always helpful to post your OS and if XP whether Home or Pro) ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow noting the space before the forward slash and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue - to see which files, if any have been replaced look in Event Viewer > System.

Look in Event Viewer in any case - Application and System for any flagged warning messages (Yellow ! or white cross on a red ground - error). Double click on any event to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste here if appropriate.

Would also be handy to check out your memory - Windows Memory Diagnostic tool

And check out your hard drive with chkdsk using the r switch.

And - without being alarmist - a good time to check that your backups are up to date :)

    http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9277/eventviewererrors1ju.jpg

Do I not need the CD for this? Just downloaded from Microsoft so I'll see what the results are and post. Going to restart the PC so that I can do the chkdsk /r. Will post results.

Sorry, not clear as to what you mean. Do I understand that you do not have an XP install CD?

Windows Memory Diagnostic runs from a floppy disk on boot up - details at the URL I posted.

Copy and paste one of those error messages in a post here - as detailed in my last post - you have a problem - or two :(

Sorry, I meant when I bought the PC, I never got a CD. But yeah, you're right, I don't have the install disc. Here's one of the errors (the latest one):

'Faulting application helphost.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, faulting module wininet.dll, version 6.0.2900.2753, fault address 0x0001b810.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.'

And here's the little bit below that (just in-case):

    '0000: 41 70 70 6c 69 63 61 74 Applicat
    0008: 69 6f 6e 20 46 61 69 6c ion Fail

    0058: 62 38 31 30 0d 0a b810.. '

After running the chkdsk (which was longest one ever!), it restarted my PC and then said the it was clean, but it's still doing it.

    I hope it ain't serious...

The lack of a Windows XP installation CD poses a few more problems than simply not being able to run System File Checker, such as the inability to repair or reinstall the operating system.

For System File Checker there may be a workaround as noted in Step 2 of the URL I posted on System File Checker.

Search your hard drive for an i386 folder - size should be around 500 Mb. It may be in C:\ or, more likely in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles. If it exists on your drive - and you are happy to work in the registry then follow step 2 in the System File Checker article.

It would be interesting to see some of the other error messages - the numeric data is not necessary. Are there any errors under System?

Does your memory check out OK?

The Application errors are all the same like that, and here's a few for System:

'AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.'

'AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x70), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.'

'The QHONLINE service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.'

'The LexBce Server service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified. '

    Etc.

I remember going through the whole i386 folder thing sometime ago with you becasue of my printer spool I think it was. I'll try it again now though and see what results I get. If that doesn't work, could I use a friends XP disc? The memory checked out OK, error free.

This KnowledgeBase Article from MS references problems with the BIOS - suggest you look for an update.
This relates to a program called QuickHeal - mean anything to you? - it's an antivirus program - not one I had heard of, but it does not seem to be functioning correctly.
This is associated with Lexmark printers - another problem there!

You may/may not have success running SFC from another XP CD - Windows is very picky - give it a try - it cannot do any harm.

Glad to hear that the memory checked out OK.

Just as I thought, the SFC didn't work. Maybe I am doing something wrong, here's a pic of what the registry looks like:

    http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5168/registry7ny.jpg

Think I may have to try and use a friends CD. I think I had QuickHeal a very long time ago, not recently though. I don't use LexMark anymore. I'm with Epson. It was something to do a registry entry that stoped the Epson working, something to do with dependancy but I solved it.

Here's more error reports from the System:

'Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the NVSvc service.'

And this one is a warning:

'TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.'

NVIDIA Display Driver Service - I guess you have a Nvidia videocard - this service appears to be non-essential and can be stopped.
This is 'by design' in SP2 see here under the heading 'KB893066 - Extra Discussion Point...'

Did you find an i386 folder and is it in the root of C:\ i.e. C:\i386 ?

Yeah, I do have an Nvidia card. That's all the errors for System. They just keep repeating over and over again. I found the i386 file, it was 443MB, and I copied to C:\, changed the entry to point it to there, re-booted, ran SFC and it still asks for the CD.
