I have a system that takes about 10 minutes to load once it is turned on. This happened all of a sudden and no new programs or hardware had been added. I ran McAfee & HouseCall but found nothing so I ran eTrust and it found 4 infected files. 2 were deleted but the other two were not. I went into were they were supposed to be using SafeMode but could not find the files. I checked to make sure that I was able to view hidden files and still nothing.

The files were in my windows/system32 folder and are an .exe file infected with Win32.BettInet.BL. After the first two were deleted the my computer now allows me to at least log on after 10 minutes, something that had taken as long as 15 minutes with multiple restarts.

My computer also locks up very easlly. I have run the latest spybot and adaware programs and I am currently clean and still having issues.

Here is todays logs for Highjackthis and starter. I need some help, i'm ready to throw this thing out the window.

    Hi Jim,

You may want to print this out or save it to text for access in safe mode.

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
    1. Install ewido security suite
    2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    4. The program will now open to the main screen.
    5. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found! ". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ( "Update successful ")
    8. Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    ewido manual updates

Please download this file: Nailfix Utility
    Save it to your desktop.
    DO NOT run it yet.

    Download dsrfix.zip
    Save it to your desktop.
    • Unzip dsrfix.zip and extract it to your desktop.
    • This will create a new folder on your desktop named dsrfix.
    • Do Not open that folder yet.
Please download APT and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.
    • Open the folder you just created and click on apt.exe and search in the window for C:\WINDOWS\system32\kenbrz.exe.
    • Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for kenbrz.exe.
Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file. (you may need to show hidden files and folders)
    • In APT again, Select C:\WINDOWS\system32\kenbrz.exe and Click Kill3
    • Then immediately delete kenbrz.exe from your system32 folder.
    Close APT.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Now open ewido and do a scan of your system.
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
    • Select "Perform action on all infections ", then proceed.
    • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report.
    • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hnwkzul] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kenbrz.exe r

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Now open the folder dsrfix on your desktop.
    • Double-Click on dsrfix.bat
    • A window will pop up briefly then close, this is normal.

Open My Computer, right click Local Disk C: and select properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except 'compress old files' and click OK. Wait for disk cleanup to complete.

Finally, restart your computer back into Normal Mode and please post a new HJT log, as well as the ewido report log from the Ewido scan.

    My not happen

I will give this a try if I can every get back in again. Yesterday morning the computer when if finially made it to the desktop, the screen went blank and then came up no signal. I rebooted with the same effect. Now I can get the power to go on, but no green light and no sounds of the computer trying to read the hard drive heard. I think it died before I could fix it.

OUCH! Sorry to hear that Jim. :(

First thought with the no signal would be video card. Possibly a bad power supply since there's no other activity though.

    last ditch effort

Since this thing has died and does not appear to be getting power to the hard drive or the HD died altogether.....how can I go about retrieving files from this dead HD? Is it even possible and if so, how costly will it be?

If you have another computer, you can put the HD in it as a slave. If it isn't dead, you should be able to access the files. If it still has no activity, try putting it in the freezer for about 20 min and try again (seriously).

Is anything getting power? Do you have any way to test the power supply output? Radio shack (or Circuit City maybe  ) has a PS tester for about $10.

    fixing the problem

I am getting a new computer and I will try to set the old HD up as a slave. Never heard of the freezer though, but will give it a try if I have too. I get power at least to the fan but I don't heard the HD running like I used to when it booted up.

Should I/we move this to a different posting location?

    It is Alive

I'm a die hard....and as such every few hours I give it one last try to boot up in hopes of getting my files off the HD in a last ditch effort. This morning out of the blue, the thing kicked over and took me as far as the user screan to select my name. It's at this point the "no signal" comes on and the system reboots.

    I'm still trying

Have a feeling it may be the video card. Try tapping F8 when you boot and select safe mode to see if it will get to logon.
