When the windows welcome screen is displayed, my user name isn't displayed. However, if I press ctrl + alt + del twice it brings up the standard login screen. If I enter my username & password it logs in fine.

Right.....next problem, a continuation really. Now tht I have logged into windows my account type is now a limited user. I cant access the user accounts through the control panel.

Iv tried doin the following, but 2 no avail. Runnin nusrmgr.cpl

Safe mode as admin (works on home & pro that way since you didn't specify)

Right-click My Computer, left-click Manage, open Local Users & Groups then open Groups. Open Administrators or Power Users or whatever level of priv. you want for your account then add it to that group.

    Deed done.

I can access the management console, but there is no user groups section. So cnt change my privalages level.

Thought it might be a virus or something like tht, so I ran an indepth virus scan, but tht just fails after a certain amount of time. ??

I haven't ever worked on XP-home so can't be sure if it is the same or different here but try a safe mode logon as the Administrator. Then control panel, User Accounts, Advanced Tab, Advanced User Management button and you should see a folder for Users and another for Groups.

You may well have been hit by a virus too and especially if your AV scan won't complete. Try an online scan using a site from the Quicklinks page (in my signature).

If you have a regular XP install CD then I'd also suggest clicking on start, on run, keying in sfc /scannow and clicking OK. note the space after sfc
