When I right click a file (eg .jpg) select "open with" I get a list of choices.
There are TWO selections for "Irfan View" please see attached
How do I remove (delete) one of these entries?

    thanks in advanced

captjlddavis--This info says it is for Win2000, but I am pretty sure it will work for WinXP As well.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=258860
When you get to the list of file extensions, click on the + next to specific file extension folder icon in the left panel and then on the dropdown OpenWith folder icon. You do the deleting from the right panel, where I suspect you will find two entries for Irfanview.
As always, back up the key before deleting--just in case you do not like the results. (Registry File|Export)
I mention the detail above, since you may find an OpenWith folder at the very bottom of the list of extensions in the right panel. That is not what you want to use.

    Welshjim,

Thanks for yor reply, though it did not do what I wanted, I continued to "hack" around and found that by dis-associating the ALL image extensions with "i_view "
it did remove i_view from the "open with" list, went in and re-associated those that I want and got the results expected - a single i_view entry in the 'Open with" list.....
    :)

Don't know yet if I messed up anything else tho....

    thanks again

    regards:captjlddavis

captjlddavis--Sorry to hear my suggestion did not work. It looks like it should work on my WinXP PC, but I have not actually tried the deletion.
Are you saying you could not find the Registry key or that following the procedure did not remove Irfanview from the context menu.? You might have had to reboot after doing any Registry change.
But you are correct. You will not find "Irfanview" in the right panel, but rather (on my PC) "i_view32.exe ".

    Welshjim,

I looked over the suggested reg hack - and it looked to me like I would have to edit EVERY "open with" entry - I tried a couple and it did not give the results I expected - I probably did soething wrong...

Anyway - by dis-associating images with Irfan view and then re-associating it seemed to accomplish what I wanted - could have been just Dumb luck....

Now if I can figure out how to get rid of the "windows and fax viewer" i would be a happy camper....I read someplace on how to do it - but it not real high on my to do list...

    Thanks again for the info

    regards:captjlddavis

    PeteC,

    Thank you for the links.

I think that they refer to disabling Picture and Fax viewer as the default viewer program. I tried it and that is what it did for me. ( but I could be wrong on that)

I was refering to removing the entry from the "open with" list.

    I found this link:

Mastering File Types in Windows XP

The Note under the section Removing a Program from the Open With List

Seems to indicate that you can not remove default programs i.e "windows and fax viewer ". Could someone please take a look and let me know if I am reading that section wrong. I tried it and it does not seem to remove the entry.

    TIA

    regards:captjlddavis

Your interpretation is correct from what I read in that article - however I would have thought that if the application was removed, in this case Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, the Open With entry would also be removed.

Maybe a reboot is necessary to get Windows to recognise the change?

    PeteC,

    Thanks. I thought that SHIMGVW.DLL was the call for P & F viewer ?

Are you suggesting that I remove it ? Do you off hand know if it is used by anything else in XP Home ?

It real isn't that big a thing (having the entry) just another one of the little annoyances.

The first URL I posted referred to removing Windows P & F Viewer - I rather assumed that you had tried that, but I guess you tried the second URL. From here

    PeteC,

    I tried Both suggestions:

[Start] [Run] type regedit.exe and click [OK]
    Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/SystemFileAssociations/image/ShellEx /ContextMenuHandlers
Delete the Folder ShellImagePreview under ContextMenuHandlers

    and

    Solution #2:

    * Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
    * Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}\ shellex.
    * Delete the MayChangeDefaultMenu key.
    * Close the Registry Editor when you're done; the change will take effect immediately.

Niether removed the entry from the "open with" list.

Looks to me like it is another "gotcha" from BG.

In as much as there seems to be several connections between SHIMGVW.DLL and windows I think it is best to just leave it alone and live with the errant entry.

    Thanks for all your efftorts.

    regards:captjlddavis
