I am using win 98 and recently my Dial in Window pops up very frequently. This is new and annoying. I have checked settings carefully but can't see why this is happening .

    Any thoughts welcome.

Obviously something's trying to connect to the net. It could be legit, like your antivirus program trying to update or it could be malware...most likely spyware trying to "phone home" or possibly a viruse trying to email itself out.

To check for spyware, use at least two of these free spyware removal programs: Spybot Ad-Aware and Ewido. I use all three.

Each tends to find things the others miss. Let each remove all it finds.

If you don't have an up-to-date antivirus program installed, there are free online scans at Bit Defender, Panda and Housecall.

Thanks for this . I 've added some more protection -- see if that works.

Especially if you don't already have a firewall, get Zone Labs ZoneAlarm. It will tell you which programs are trying to connect and allow you to permit them access or not. Investigate each program by typing the name into a Google search.
