When booting, got an error message, "Aux device error ... ", and then the system refused to boot. After physically disconnecting all aux devices, the system started. Is there another way of testing which device is bad w/o physically disonnecting the devices?

I remember a previous message related to a similar problem that had the user uncheck device drivers from list and then check each one, one by one to identify the problem device/driver. Can't remember which list.

    Hello Chuck,

Right click My Computer > properties > Hardware > Device Manager > expand the devices > right click on the device > in the general tab at the bottom under Device usage there is a dropdown menu > you can disable it there.

I think this is what you're looking for if one of the device drivers is giving you trouble.

One other option which is in msconfig, Diagnostic startup - loads the basic drivers. A warning about Diag startup - it wipes System Restore points, no idea why it does that.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

Not quite what I remembered doing before. I recall a checklist with all drivers checked ... one started by unchecking all but basic drivers ... then they were added one by one until the system problem re-appeared. Do I remember falsely?

    Hi Chuck,

I don't know of a list that you reference, my reasoning is that disabling a device also disables driver loading.

But wait around, maybe somebody does know where that list is.

Is it possible you're thinking os msconfig? "Start Run msconfig" --> start tab.

No. It was advice on using some system check list of drivers ... I remember that because the advice was to be sure not to make permenant changes there but when the problem was found, to disable it in the Device Manager, and restore the system check list as it was ... or to its default.

Hi ... I remember reading an post about what chuckmg is talking about , it I believe has to do with >> start >> run >> verifier and to stop it if I can remember would be verifier / reset ......... Is this what you were referring about chuckmg ?

    a. Start/Run/Verifier
    b. Select Create Standard Settings
    c. Select the type of drivers to verify (suggest starting with the unsigned ones first)
    d. The unsigned ones are listed
    e. Reboot
    f. If the bootup produces a blue screen, look for the error message identifying the problem driver.
    g. To kill the Verifier run Verifier/reset

If this is what you were referring to ? Maybe someone can explain it more

    Terry,

That's almost it! But the verifier just verifys; it dosen't allow activation or deactivation of individual drivers. But it was like that.
