Symantec Security Alert keeps popping up every minute or so...can't seem to do anything to get rid of it. Symantec has something about this on their site, but it only refers to when you've just installed Windows XP SP 2 or just installed a Norton product...neither of which is the case.

    Alert is as follows:
Your computer is at risk in the following areas:
    -Virus protection is turned off
Open your Norton product to resolve these issues.
(Check box) To prevent duplicate security status alerts, use my existing Norton alerts and turn off redundant Windows Security Center alerts.(recommended)

I have my Norton Anti-Virus turned on, my Windows firewall turned off, my Zone Alarm turned on, my Windows XP Security Center not monitoring my anti-virus software.

Anyone have a solution to this?? I am going insane with it.

I have seen this with outdated Norton products. Is it time for a new version?

Eiswein--Do you have more than one antivirus program running? They could be in conflict.
Do you have a choice which program should be running? If you prefer Norton,
a possibility which is actually what that message says, but a little more detail:
Open the Control Panel|Security Center and on the left panel, click where it says "change the way security center alerts me ". Make sure the "Virus Protection" box is unchecked.

    What do you think?

If I have a subscription I shouldn't need a new version unless they provide it for free..ha ha.

Yes, the control panel security settings are okay, I checked that.

Here's what I found when I googled it again...what do you think?

Take the path C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\ to locate two files; symwsc.exe and symwscno.exe. Create a new folder in the same directory and place the two files in it rather than delete them (just in case...). You shouldn't get the alerts after this.

    Removing the files

Removing the files worked but it's the fact that nothing was really solved...as alerts will not be generated at all now, even if they are legit.

    Try this:
Put back the file where they were and go to control panel/admin tools/services and set the SymWMI Service to manual or disabled. This is the service that binds Norton AV to the windows security center.

    That worked, too

That worked too but is this a better solution? I still won't receive alerts even if they are legitimate, right?

    IceWine--
It is not clear from that message just what virus protection is turned off. AutoProtect or the whole Antivirus program?
Do you have AutoProtect enabled in the NAV settings (Norton Antivirus Options window)?
Is CCApp showing as a process with a check in the box to the left in Start|Run|type msconfig|OK|Startup tab?
Are CCApp.exe and Navapsvc.exe shown (as running processes) in TaskManager|Processes tab?
If "no" to any of those questions, then the message is legitimately warning you that NAV is not protecting your PC. And you do not want to disable the message, but fix the problem.
The message should not have anything to do with your subscription, unless you know it has run out.
Did you read that link I suggested yesterday?

    Yes i read it

Yes, I read the link that you provided but none of the reasons it suggested applied. I believe the message is not legit as autoprotect is enabled and both of the NAV processes run at startup. Thanks

IceWine--You could try contacting Symantec Technical Support by email.
    technicalsupport@symantec.iseva.net
Not the sharpest spoons in the drawer, but often with enough back and forth (they are in India but apparently do not synch with our time) you or they will solve the problem.
You do confirm that your subscription is up to date?

This alert occurs because some/all of the Norton Antivirus software features
are disabled for whatever reason (I disabled Norton AV because I am using
"AVG Free ", but I still wanted Norton AV as a second string when scanning
    files).
It took some investigation to come find a solution, but I did, and the
    remedy is simple.
Find the file SymWSCNo.exe (do a search if necessary).
    It's most probably in the path C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec
    Shared\Security Center\
Now just rename it to SymWSCNo.ex_
You shouldn't get the alerts after this. I've done this and had no problems
since I did it more than a year ago.

    windows problem

I was having the same problem. On symantec's page it said to keep running live update until there were no more updates left. I ran it a couple of times and that worked for me. I don't know why this was suddenly a problem for me, but it's fixed for now.
