 I have 1g ram 2.2 processor. When I first boot up there is 44 processes going. There are a few of these I am sure I do not need. How can I keep them from starting up at boot?

    TIA

Click on Start > Run and type in "services.msc" sans quotes. Right click on the service of your choice and select properties. Use the 'Startup Type' method to choose to either manual, if you want to start the service later, or disable if you don't use it at all. Just make sure before you disable any that you are sure you don't need it. Here's a good reference to use:

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Lesteet!

How did you determine that? It 'sounds' like you assume but don't know. There are a few sites dealing with processes, which you need, which may be set to manual or disabled and which you should set to disabled unless you specifically need them.

BlackViper is such a site but it is curently down.

Services Guide for Windows XP is another one and I'm almost sure that the respective opinions differ, at least in detail.

If you go google on 'Windows XP Services', you will find more guides than you care to read!

Hmm ...... ...... the link provided by dopey is based on BlackViper. He (not BlackViper) says:

I wonder if BlackViper agreed to that?

If you go to his Windows XP Tweaking Page you will find that he is a bit behind schedule:

I have not checked every service but it certainly does not include the changes for SP2 and possibly not even SP1!

Another hmm ...... ...... after checking 'The Elder Geek' to which both I and Newt provided a link ...... ...... neither does his guide include changes for SP2.

Too bad BlackViper has lost interest ...... ...... or whatever is going on because his latest included changes for SP2.

Conclusion: Check and check again that the information is up to date in terms of Sevice Packs!

I don't think the issue is Services, its the startup programs running in the background.

Lesteet, for additional information, go here for links to data bases for info on running programs http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

I will be careful, after the boot I still have 77750 ram available so there is no hurry.

A word to the wise from Mr. Experience.

If you do not know DO NOT mess with Services.

In other words I thought I didn't just to find out that I did.

I believe there also may be Services that may well depend on each other.

    And I agree with charlesvar

What loads at startup can cause problems/conflicts/slowdown. But that can be controled by the user. And I find that loading too much saves no time and just slows things down.

I myself use a Program called STARTUP COP And I have been using it since way back in Win98.
