My mom recently messed with some internet options (set internet preferences back to default and disabled some updates) and now the pictures on my web browser sometimes won't show up. I'm using IE. What do I do?

What OS & what IE version?

    Any particular type of pictures?

"Disabled some updates" - sorry but not sure what you mean.

    XP will have IE6.

Are your browser multimedia settings like the ones pictured?

robrt34--You say this happens "sometimes ". So the problem could be a server problem. Try clicking Refresh or right click on the space where the image should be|Show Picture.
If that does not work there are several other things that can be done, but usually they are for cases where you cannot see any images at any site.

However, it might be easier to use System Restore to a date before your mother changed things. Then go to Windows Update to get anything that may have been released after the System Restore point, as well as update your Antivirus and Spyware Detector programs.

Before I answer that, did you "Try clicking Refresh or right click on the space where the image should be|Show Picture "?
    Now System Restore.
First find System Restore and determine that it is set on. Perhaps easiest is right click on My Computer|Properties|System Restore tab. Is the "Turn off System Restore" box unchecked? If so, good. (If it is checked you probably not be able to use System Restore.)
If all is OK, close that window and go here. Start|All
Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Restore. You want to pick "Restore my computer to an earlier time "|Next|then a date prior to the date your mother used the PC. Keep following the directions. At the end you will be asked to reboot.
If you have installed any programs or program updates (like Windows Update or Antivirus definitions) after the date to which you restored the PC, you will have to reinstall these after the reboot.

Also - I'm guessing you have XP with no service packs if you are missing the Media Bar box since that is a SP1 item.

You really need to update to SP2 as soon as possible.

Microsoft update site and scan for critical updates. It will show up as one you need and should be installed first.

Big update so if you aren't on broadband you should consider getting the service pack on a CD.

You can order a free CD or download from here (see right margin)
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
Ordering the CD is helpful if you are on dialup, since the download is large.

Before you install you should read here
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;windowsxpsp2

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2chngs.mspx

    http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035_11-5312854.html#
You will have to register at the last site, but it is free.

And once installed, go to Windows Update and get all the Updates. (I suspect there will be quite a few if you install from the CD. Perhaps fewer if you download.)
