hi, guys. I was trying to re-install my os(xp professional sp2) to my
    computer bought a year ago.

first, I formated my c drive, then booted from the xp-cd-rom. Everything
was fine when the intalling program copied all the files to c drive from the cd. After that, the computer re-started automatically, and I chose to boot from my hard-disk so as to continue the intalling. But it was then things gone crazy.

I could see the large "Windows xp" logo at the center of the screen and a small progress bar below with a blue block sliding inside repeatedly.

However, the blue block stopped in its third round and the system hung up.
(If I clicked the "num lock" button on my key board, the corrsponding green light did not repsond.)

I have tried for 2 more times only to get the same result.

What is going on with my computer?!!!

By the way, I also tried to intall a win2000 and I succeeded, which confused me even more. Also note that my original os was xp home edition; therefore I don't think there is any incompatibility between my computer and xp.

Please tell me what to do... thank you all.

I believe you should have booted back from the cd after the restart. The files were copied to the hd but not yet installed.

dopey has a point - keep your fingers away from the keyboard and let the computer reboot automatically without any user intervention :)

If we've missed the point here, be sure to post back.

I see you also said you loaded W2K, do you now have a dual boot system?

I tackled down the problem!! thanks folks...

It turned out that the xp sp2 is not compatible with my

mainboard which is MS6787 or something. Then I turned

to sp1 and succeeded. The only thing need to do is to

manually install hotfix such as KB835732 and KB823980.

    Thank you :)
